Forecasters say as much as 1 to 2 inches of rain per hour could fall in some areas of the state, raising concerns about overflowing streams and rivers, and rapid flash flooding on roads and highways. They also can’t rule out the possibility of strong damaging winds or an isolated tornado.
The flood watch — issued Tuesday afternoon — will be active from 2 a.m. Wednesday through Wednesday evening in 18 counties: Bergen, Burlington, Camden, Essex, Gloucester, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Passaic, Salem, Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren.
“You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible flood warnings,” the weather service’s regional office in Mount Holly said in the flood watch. “Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.”
In many parts of New Jersey, the ground is already saturated from several waves of rain showers and thunderstorms on Saturday, Sunday and early Monday. As much as 4 to 5 inches of rain fell in some towns in less than 24 hours.
