What are the best single-player PS5 games?
There are a lot of great multiplayer games out there, but when you need a little time to yourself, nothing can replace a solid single-player adventure.
In these games, you don’t have to worry about rushing to keep up with the crowd and can instead take your time exploring a brand-new world.
Plus, single-player games have a much larger focus on narrative, allowing you to experience some truly wonderful stories.
Fortunately, there’s no shortage of great single-player games on PS5, and we’ve rounded up the best of the best!
The 20 Best Single-Player PS5 Games
We’ve played through many single-player games while making this list, and selected games based on their gameplay mechanics, story, and how fun they are to play.
Along with this, we’ve tried to include a little bit of something for everyone, from horror titles to action-adventure games, roguelikes, and RPGs.
So, if you’re ready to start your next great adventure, here’s our list of the 20 best single-player PS5 games:
20. Persona 5 Royal
Starting us off in modern-day Tokyo is Persona 5 Royal, an enhanced version of the 2016 game that follows a high school student known as Joker.
However, just like in the best high school anime series, things quickly get interesting when Joker and a few fellow students start developing special powers.
With their newfound powers, they become the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, a band of vigilantes who explore the metaverse to steal malicious intentions from adults.
This is easily one of the best JRPGs you can play right now, and its unique story and interesting characters make it incredibly addictive.
The turn-based combat system is also extremely well-designed, and it is easy to jump into even if you’ve never played a Persona game before!
19. Resident Evil Village
The eighth major installment in the Resident Evil series, Village, is an intense horror game that will leave you majorly unsettled.
Set a few years after Biohazard, this game revolves around Ethan Winters and his search for his daughter in a village overrun with mutated creatures.
Even if you haven’t played this game yourself, you’ve probably at least heard the hype around Lady Dimitrescu, an antagonist who became wildly popular.
The voluptuous vampiress aside, this game is extremely innovative in terms of exploration, puzzles, and zone unlocking.
While some of these changes make the game a bit easier than its predecessor, Village is still insanely terrifying.
It also offers a fantastic end to Ethan’s story, and once you start playing, you won’t want to stop until the credits roll.
18. Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition
The fifth mainline installment in the Devil May Cry series, this game takes place five years after the previous game.
While it follows Dante and Nero, there is a new protagonist, V, who has a mysterious origin and connection to the Demon King Urizen.
This game really shines when it comes to the ton of combat playstyles it allows, as well as its in-depth movesets that look and feel incredible to execute.
The remixed difficulty modes also provide a ton of replayability, and neither the enemies nor bosses ever feel boring to fight.
We really love this game because its story wraps up everything that it needs to while paving the way for a potential new era in the future.
If you’re looking for an epic, high-octane single-player adventure, look no further than Devil May Cry 5!
17. Sifu
Sifu is a third-person brawler with an incredibly sleek art style that really makes it stand out from anything else.
This game is all about kicking ass and making it look cinematic. So, if you’ve ever wanted to live out your dreams of being Jackie Chan, this game’s for you!
The plot of this game revolves around tracking down and getting revenge on the assassins who murdered your family.
You have no allies and companions to rely on, just your fists and feet against countless waves of enemies.
However, you can’t just mash buttons and hope for the best. Instead, you have to learn how to use positioning and the environment to your advantage.
There are a ton of things you can use to take out enemies, including makeshift weapons, windows, and high ledges, so be on the lookout!
Sifu is definitely one of the best fighting games on the PS5, and it is perfect for those who want a solo kung fu adventure!
16. The Last of Us Part 1
The Last of Us Part 1 is an incredible game, both mechanically and narratively. If you haven’t played it yet, you’re really missing out!
This game revolves all around Joel Miller and his life after the apocalypse, where he’s done what he needs to in order to stay alive.
However, his world is suddenly shaken up when he’s tasked with delivering a young girl, Ellie, who’s immune to the virus that’s destroyed the world.
While it starts off as just a job he doesn’t want to do, you can’t travel halfway across the country with someone and not end up changing.
The dynamic between Joel and Ellie is one of the best in gaming, and they’re who most people think of when asked to name an iconic duo.
TLOU is definitely one of the best-written games ever, but it doesn’t lack action, and facing clickers never stops being terrifying.
15. Astro’s Playroom
Okay, so Astro’s Playroom is a game that every PS5 comes pre-loaded with, but unfortunately, many people tend to overlook it.
A sequel to Astro Bot Rescue Mission, this game serves as a tech demo for the DualSense controller, but it’s also surprisingly fun!
In this game, players control Astro as he jumps, hovers, and punches his way through various 3D platformer levels.
If you’re a fan of the best games like Mario Party, you will get a lot of enjoyment from this short and sweet adventure.
What really makes this game so cool is that it really shows off what the DualSense controller can do, such as providing feedback based on the material you walk on.
There are also a ton of secrets to find that call back to some of the biggest PlayStation series that really drum up some nostalgia.
14. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has one of the biggest open-world maps in video game history, and you’ll want to explore every inch of it.
This game gives players control of Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter known as a Witcher, who’s searching for his adopted daughter, Ciri.
While trying to track down Ciri, there are always people to help and monsters to slay in the worn-torn unnamed continent.
Although this game was originally released in 2015, it has since been remastered for the PS5 with visual enhancements and new content.
There are even new outfits and a quest inspired by the popular Netflix series, so if that’s what brought you to the game, you’ll feel right at home!
Even if you haven’t played the previous two games, The Witcher 3 can be jumped into without worrying about feeling lost.
13. Hades
Hades is one of the best rouge-like dungeon crawlers in modern gaming, and it’s extremely hard to put down once you start playing.
In this game, players take control of Zagreus, the prince of Hades and son of the titular god, as he tries to break out of the underworld.
However, battling your way through Tartarus, Asphodel, Elysium, and the Temple of Hades is no small feat. Even for a god!
Fortunately, Zagreus is nothing if not persistent, and every death actually serves a purpose to push the storyline along, allowing you to learn more about other characters.
The combat in this game is fast-paced and filled with amazing boons that you can get from the gods of Olympus to unleash a variety of abilities on your foes.
Of course, the highlight of this game for us is the good boy Cerbeus, who you can pet and give treats to after you die.
Honestly, for a game with such a simple premise, Hades has incredible depth in terms of storytelling, and we’re absolutely hooked.
If you haven’t yet played this amazing game, now is the perfect time since Hades 2 is in development, and it promises to be just as great!
12. Lost Judgment
Lost Judgment is an action-adventure game and the sequel to 2018’s Judgement, a spin-off of the Like a Dragon series.
This game revolves around Takayuki Yagami, a private detective who is investigating a criminal accused of murder and sexual harassment.
However, things aren’t exactly cut and dry in this case, and as players explore the truth, they’ll find more than they bargained for.
As Yagami, players can explore downtown Tokyo and Yokohama while looking for leads and solving smaller local disputes.
There are three different stances players can use as Yagmai during combat to take advantage of his distinct martial arts forms.
By the time you uncover all of the secrets this game has to offer, you’ll be wondering whether you should continue defending the law or start exacting your own justice.
Lost Judgement is easily one of the best PS5 RPG games, and you’ll never know where the story will take you next!
11. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart builds on the iconic franchise to create a truly unforgettable single-player game.
Rift Apart is a dimension-hopping adventure where the duo must fight against an evil emperor from another reality.
What really blows our minds about this game is that even when you’re jumping through portals, there are no stuttering or loading issues.
It really highlights just how powerful the PS5 is in that it can deliver seamless gameplay in a game like this that is so jam-packed with fast-paced action.
This game really doesn’t skimp on the details, and it couples its stunning visuals with loads of impressive weapons and memorable characters, both new and old.
Rift Apart is, without a doubt, one of the best PS5 exclusive games, and it is definitely worth checking out for yourself!
10. Horizon: Forbidden West
A sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn, Forbidden West is all about Aloy as she explores a dangerous new land filled with a new variety of dangerous threats.
With the land dying, storms and blight have been tearing through what’s left of humanity, putting life once again on the precipice of extinction.
As Aloy, players will have to uncover the reasons behind these sudden calamities and find a way to stop them before it’s too late.
While circumstances may be dire, it’s hard not to get sidetracked in this game by all of the stunning locations you can visit and people you can meet.
Guerrilla Games really outdid themselves with Forbbiden West in terms of graphics, gameplay, and narrative.
Everything in Forbidden West is bigger and better than Zero Dawn, with an improved combat system and the addition of underwater exploration.
This is one great single-player game for the PS5 that you really shouldn’t let yourself miss out on!
9. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered
We’re going to say it upfront, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered is an absolute masterpiece, and it’s the best web-slinging game ever made.
Not only is its original story simply marvelous, but Yuri Lowenthal kills it as Peter Parker, and his voice acting really brings the character to life.
The mechanics are also worth writing home about because they’re so intuitive and make every instance of combat feel extremely rewarding.
Also, the way your momentum carries you when you’re swinging through the city — chef kiss — it’s perfection.
Along with Spidey’s typical webs, this game also gives players access to a variety of gadgets, including concussive blasts and electrical webs.
If you haven’t checked out this game yet, you are seriously missing out on a great time, even if you’re not a die-hard Marvel fan!
Plus, with the highly anticipated Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 set to release in October 2023, now is the perfect time to get caught up!
8. Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves
Uncharted is one of the best PS5 third-person games, and this collection includes Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.
With both of these games, you will have hours of fun exploring places that range from sprawling urban jungles to exotic islands where pirates once roamed.
On the PS5, this collection is available in super sharp 4k or 1080p with a high 120fps for a super smooth experience.
The haptic feedback on the controller also allows you to really feel the impact as Nathan Drake climbs, crawls, and punches his way through obstacles.
Of course, loading times have also been significantly reduced for seamless transitions, so it feels more like playing a movie than an actual video game.
If you love delving into ruins, solving age-old mysteries, and exploring, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves is one of the best single-player games you can play!
7. Returnal
Returnal is a fascinating rogue-like that gives players control of Selene after she crashes on a strange alien planet.
However, every time the player dies, they are reset back to the beginning in a seemingly endless loop of resurrection.
Players must comb through the remains of a lost civilization in order to understand why this reset exists and how it can be stopped.
Like Hades, each run is different, so you’re not just doing the same level over and over until you finally stop dying.
There are checkpoints that you can reach as well, so that you’re not always stuck going back to the very beginning, which is extremely nice.
Returnal will really challenge you to think outside the box, but it’s wholly addictive, especially once you start learning more about the story!
6. Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil 4 is the most recent release in the series, and it is a full remake of the original game.
Set six years after the disaster in Racoon City, players take up the mantle of Leon Kennedy as he tries to recuse the President’s kidnapped daughter.
His search leads him to a rural European village where locals really don’t take kindly to outsiders, and horrors lurk around every corner.
While the original was already one of the best video games of all time, this remake goes above and beyond to make it even better.
Even if you have never played a Resident Evil game before, if you love single-player horror games, you have to check this one out!
5. Demon’s Souls
Demon’s Souls debuted as a launch title for the PS5, and if you’re a fan of Dark Souls, you will absolutely love it!
A remake of the PS3 game, Demon’s Souls for the PS5 brings a whole new generation of players into the fog-filled world of Boletaria.
With an ancient demon from the dawn of time awakened, it is up to the players to put an end to the terror and free the land.
Like Dark Souls, players start off choosing their character’s class and appearance, though classes can be changed later in the game.
Additionally, if players are killed, they will lose unused souls and only regain them by traveling back to where they died.
One interesting change that was included in this remake is the Fractured World mode, which mirrors and reverses the layout of environments.
If you missed out on the PS3 Demon’s Souls, you really shouldn’t miss out on this remastered version!
4. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
Okay, so you know how we said Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered is the best web-slinging game? Well, Miles Morales shares that top spot.
Following the events of Marvel’s Spider-Man, this game picks up with Miles Morales, a new Spider-Man who Peter leaves in charge of the city while he’s away.
Of course, things quickly spiral out of control as Miles tries to stop his home from being destroyed while proving he’s a worthy web crawler.
First off, the visuals and gameplay here are just as good, if not better, than the first game, but it’s really Miles who makes this game shine.
Throughout this game, Miles is an absolute star who consistently shows what being a hero is all about.
While the original game is amazing, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is the cherry that tops it all off.
Plus, it has an absolutely banging soundtrack that you’ll end up having on repeat weeks after you complete this game.
3. Ghost Of Tsushima Director’s Cut
Ghost of Tsushima is another marvel of a game that is both stunning to look at and extremely rewarding to play.
It follows the story of samurai Jin as he struggles to protect Tsushima Island during the Mongol invasion of Japan.
Throughout the game, Jin must grapple with using honorable methods of fighting that could result in more casualties or dishonorable methods that could save lives.
This game also features a vast open world that players can explore to find side quests and unique features like fox shrines.
Fox shrines make us ridiculously happy because the foxes are just incredibly cute, and sometimes you can even pet them. Best game!
The Director’s Cut also comes with the Iki Island expansion and Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, an online co-op mode.
When it comes to single-player games, this is one of the best you can play, and we’re really holding out hope for a sequel!
2. God Of War Ragnarök
God Of War Ragnarök picks up three years after the 2018 game, and Fimbulwinter has taken hold of the nine realms.
With the world frozen over, things get even more complicated when Norse gods come knocking on the former God of War’s door.
Spurred into action and by Atreus seeking answers about who he’s supposed to be, the father and son duo set out on an adventure that will test the bonds they’ve built.
Ragnarök is bigger, tougher, and more action-packed than ever, pitting Kratos against the strongest foes the Norse world has to offer.
However, what really makes this story shine are the unforgettable characters and their relationships that are so thoughtfully told in this game.
Seriously, we were crying in the first five minutes of the game because it really comes at you hard and fast with the emotions!
This is easily one of the best single-player games on PS5, and we can’t wait to see what the future has in store for Kratos and Atreus!
1. Elden Ring
Taking our number one spot is none other than Elden Ring, the 2022 Game of the Year winner that we just can’t stop playing.
If you love Dark Souls, Elden Ring is basically a must-play. Hell, even if you’ve never played a Souls game, Elden Ring is amazingly enjoyable!
The scale of the open world is incredible, and there is so much to do and see that you can easily just spend hours exploring.
It is also entirely open, so you can go anywhere you want; even high-level areas are available from the very start of the game!
The world-building was also done by George R. R. Martin, the author of A Song of Ice and Fire, which was adapted into Game of Thrones!
Plus, even though it’s one of the best single-player games on PS5, it does have multiplayer, so you can summon your friends to help you out if you want!
If that wasn’t cool enough, Elden Ring also has a ton of replayability, since you can New Game Plus it up to 7 times!
This continues to make the game more and more difficult, so the Hardest Bosses in Elden Ring become truly nightmarish!
