The Court of Master Sommeliers (CMS) is an educational organisation established in 1977 to encourage improved standards of beverage service by sommeliers, particularly in wine and food pairing. From the court’s inception through 2018, a worldwide total of 274 people have earned its Master Sommelier diploma, the highest level.[3]
It gained a royal charter in 1364; although its control over the wine industry was gradually loosened by deregulation, the company continued to have considerable influence within it. In 1953, the first six Masters of Wine were granted that title after passing an exam given by the company, and became heads of the Institute of Masters of Wine (IMW) established two years later.[4]
Since the wine industry depended on knowledgeable service professionals to sell its products, they needed a way to train and recognize superior wine knowledge in that industry. It was also a way to rebuild the sommelier profession in the UK, which had dwindled since World War II.[4]

Since 1969, when the first examination was held in Vintners Hall London, less than 300 candidates have earned the title Master Sommelier. There are now Master Sommeliers from the UK, USA, Germany, France, South America, Austria, China, Poland, Bulgaria, Japan, Turkey, Australia & New Zealand.
When selecting wines and other drinks the customer will know they can follow your advice with confidence.. The letters MS after your name will reassure an employer that you are a professional beverage manager and can control an efficient and profitable beverage service.
The examination is similar in format and content to that of the Advanced Sommelier Certificate examinations, comprising examinations in Theoretical Knowledge, Practical Tasting and Practical Service, except knowledge which is tested by oral questioning.. For years I’ve heard about these mythical people, Master Sommeliers or MSs, without ever fully understanding what was involved (MWs who can pour straight?), so I’m delighted to be able to publish a few more details below.
Since the Master Sommelier Diploma was introduced in 1969, under the auspices of the Vintners Company, The Institute of Masters of Wine, The British Hotels & Restaurants Association, The Wine & Spirit Association of Great Britain and The Wholesale Tobacco Trade Association, 132 people from around the world have become Master Sommeliers. Of these, 10 are known to have passed away, many more have retired or left the industry apparently
