According to the producers of the James Bond franchise, the iconic character will continue to be portrayed by a male actor. Recent speculation suggested that the next Bond could potentially be a woman, following calls for more diversity in the industry. However, the film’s producer confirmed that Bond would remain a male character. The decision sparked discussion about the role of gender in the film industry, with some arguing for more inclusive representation, while others defended the tradition and history of the character. Ultimately, the next James Bond will definitively be male, following the long-established tradition..
In an interview with Variety, producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson opened up about their search for the next James Bond. While they have been too focused on No Time To Die to properly begin their search for the next Bond, they are definite that whoever he is, he will still be British or from the Commonwealth, as well as a man.
Broccoli went on to explain that “He can be of any color, but he is male. I believe we should be creating new characters for women – strong female characters. I’m not particularly interested in taking a male character and having a woman play it. I think women are far more interesting than that.” Given the long history of Ian Fleming’s Bond and the hard-coded masculinity that goes into the very definition of the character, it makes perfect sense.
This is in response to reports from last year that suggested the franchise would feature a female 007, with all signs pointing to Lashana Lynch. While the actress does seem to occupy a 00 role in the movie based on the trailer, there is no confirmation that it is a 007 role, and even if she is, that also doesn’t mean she’s the next James Bond.
No Time To Die will be released in cinemas April 10, 2020.
