A Month of Epic Franchise Films: Top 5 Movies Coming in September 2023 – Top

Now that September’s here, we’re starting to see the effects of the strike. With no actors to promote the films, studios are deciding to push release dates in the hopes that things would be settled by then. Poor Things, starring Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe, has been pushed from September to December, and Luca Guadagnino’s film Challengers faced the same fate, with its release date moving from September 2023 to April 2024.

You’ll have better luck if you’re attending film festivals, but just know that there aren’t many options in the cinema this month. Without further ado, here are the biggest new movies of September 2023.

 

New Movies of September 2023

1. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 | September 8th 2023

My Big Fat Greek Wedding was released about 21 years ago, and it put Nia Vardalos on the map. Unfortunately, she wasn’t able to replicate this movie’s success in the rom-com space. Her other movies after that, like I Hate Valentine’s Day and My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 didn’t perform well critically. Will this third movie be a return to form for the franchise?

Vardalos is triple-hatting for this one: director, writer and lead actress. This third film follows the Portokalos family as they travel to a family reunion in Greece. Toula’s (Vardalos) father has since passed, and Toula is tasked with finding his best friends to let them know the news. The trailer looks promising, so hopefully this third film is more like the first film than the second.

 

2. The Nun II | September 8th, 2023

It’s been 5 years since the release of the first film, and we’re back again for more Valak time. In the first film, Sister Irene and Father Burke investigated the death of a nun in Saint Cartha’s monastery in Romania, which ended with Sister Irene facing off with the demon Valak, where she banished the demon forever. Well, clearly not forever since there’s a second movie.

Sister Irene is now living in France, thinking that she and Maurice are safe from Valak. However, when a priest is murdered, it becomes clear that Valak is back. The quality of the movies in The Conjuring universe varies, so it’s hard to say if this will be good or just a simple cash-grab. But if you’re a fan of the universe, then you might just want to take a chance on this flick.

 

3. A Haunting in Venice | September 15th, 2023

After the previous Hercule Poirot movie committed crimes against dance – if you know, you know – I thought the franchise was dead in the water. Evidently not since we’re back for a third film in the franchise. Based on the Agatha Christie novel Hallowe’en Party, Poirot (Kenneth Branagh) finds himself caught up in a murder mystery once more, when he attends a séance at a haunted palazzo. Even though he’s retired, he will have to go on the case once more, to see through the lies and find the murderer.

What makes this film different from the rest is the horror elements and staging. I saw this trailer just before I saw Oppenheimer, and I have to say that I’m intrigued to catch this. Considering the lack of blockbuster options this month, this film might end up performing quite well.

 

4. Saw X | September 29th, 2023

Even though this is Saw X, it’s set between the events of the first and second Saw movies. John aka the infamous serial killer Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) travels to Mexico for a risky and experimental medical procedure in the hopes that his cancer would be cured. He then discovers that the entire operation is a scam to defraud vulnerable, terminally ill patients. So he decides to turn the tables on everyone who played a part in this scam, and brings them into his most personal game yet.

Live or die, the choice is yours.

 

5. Dicks: The Musical | September 29th, 2023

Dicks: The Musical is the first movie musical released by A24, and based on the trailer, it will be either absolutely incredible or annoyingly insufferable. Craig Tiddle and Trevor Brock are two salesmen at the top of their game; they’re also douchebags. While at work, they discover that they are twins who have been separated at birth – sound familiar? They also decide to parent trap their parents so they can be a real family again. The only problem is, their father is gay.

There’s tons of funny people on board, like Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally and Bowen Yang. There’s also Megan Thee Stallion, which sounds like a fun casting decision. If you want to see a musical version of The Parent Trap, with infinitely more chaos, then this is the movie for you.
