The nominations for the 2019 Directors Guild Awards have been announced, with “A Star is Born” and “Green Book” among the top contenders. Bradley Cooper received a nomination for his directorial debut with “A Star is Born,” while filmmakers Peter Farrelly, Spike Lee, Adam McKay, and Alfonso Cuaron also scored nominations for their respective films. The Directors Guild Awards are considered a strong indicator of who will be nominated for the Best Director category at the Oscars, making these nominations a significant step towards potential Academy Awards success for these films. The winners will be announced on February 2, 2019..
The Directors Guild of America have found their five best directorial achievements of the year, and it’s not too much of a shock to see that the five men nominated overlap at a lot of the precursor awards that have been announced so far. Favorites Alfonso Cuaron (Roma) and Bradley Cooper (A Star is Born) were among the nominees, but we also saw comedy directors Peter Farrelly (Green Book) and Adam McKay (Vice) make it in as well.
There was also a list of five first-time directors nominated this year, and it was no surprise whatsoever to see Bradley Cooper also fall into this category, as well as indie favorite Bo Burnham get his nod for Eighth Grade. It’s also great to see more recognition for A Private War, directed by Matthew Heinman, a film that has gone under the radar this awards season, minus a nomination for Best Actress at the Golden Globes for Rosamund Pike.
The DGA did not nominate a few notable names, like Ryan Coogler for Black Panther, Yorgos Lanthimos for The Favourite, Barry Jenkins for If Beale Street Could Talk, or Damien Chazelle for First Man. None of these directors were nominated at the Golden Globes, either, where we saw the five nominated DGA directors match up perfectly. And before anybody cries foul on John Krasinski not being nominated in the first-time directors race, he previously directed The Hollars, so he does not qualify this year for A Quiet Place.
Here’s the list of nominated directors:
Outstanding Directorial Achievement
Bradley Cooper for A Star is Born
Alfonso Cuaron for Roma
Peter Farrelly for Green Book
Spike Lee for BlacKkKlansman
Adam McKay for Vice
Outstanding Directorial Achievement for First Time Directors
Bo Burnham for Eighth Grade
Bradley Cooper for A Star is Born
Carlos Lopez Estrada for Blindspotting
Matthew Heinman for A Private War
Boots Riley for Sorry to Bother You
The DGA will announce their winners on Saturday, February 2nd.
