Netflix just released the official trailer for All the Bright Places, starring Elle Fanning and Justice Smith. The movie is an adaptation of a popular YA book of the same name by Jennifer Niven. Fanning plays Violet, a girl still dealing with the aftermath of her sister’s death. Then Smith’s Theodore Finch enters the picture, trying to bring her out of the darkness and into a bright place, hence the title.
It’s really quite lovely stuff, especially when the dialogue includes things like, “You are all the colours at once. At full brightness.” I wish someone would say things like that to me. One of the main things that stands out is the idea that when you are with a person, you cannot just expect brightness – there’s the mess too. Violet is dealing with a tragedy, while Finch has got demons of his own. It fleshes out one of the more realistic depictions of love, and this is especially important given that it is a film catered to young people.
All the Bright Places is one of the many books being adapted into films by Netflix this year, among the likes of To All the Boys: P.S I Still Love You and I’m Thinking of Ending Things. You can catch the film on Netflix February 28, 2020.
