Announcement of Nominees: PGA, WGA, and DGA Award Contenders Revealed

Over the past couple of days, the triple-crown of guild awards, the Producers, Directors, and Writers Guilds, have sounded off their nominees for the year, and with it comes a last minute sense before the Oscars of which films and aspects of films are really closing in on nominations next week. We’ll go one by one through the three bodies with their nominees. I will have some additional analysis with my final Oscar predictions post later this week.

The Two Popes is the only other adapted script that seems to have real traction in the Oscar race, so it will be fun to watch that battle continue. It was ruled an original screenplay here at WGA.

The original battle will also include The Farewell, Pain and Glory, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood at the Oscars, all three were ineligible here due to their writers not being a part of the guild. Otherwise, this was a big show for 1917 and Booksmart (the latter of which was also nominated at BAFTA), and Knives out is certainly creeping up on a nomination, too.

This was a huge bounce-back for Jojo Rabbit, which also benefited from six nominations at BAFTA, too. Does this automatically mean Waititi also scores an Oscar nomination? I don’t think so, and the track record at DGA usually follows the pattern of four out of the five being nominated. At the Oscars, Waititi has to score over Todd Phillips (Joker), Pedro Almodovar (Pain and Glory), Greta Gerwig (Little Women), and Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story). It could happen, but despite my love for the film, I’m thinking Phillips is more likely.

I would say it’s a safe bet that every film aside from Knives Out is nominated on Monday for Best Picture, so this really hurts films like Bombshell, The Farewell, and The Two Popes. Again, it doesn’t make it impossible for these three to be nominated, but it’s now much more difficult.

The winners for WGA are handed out Saturday, February 1st. The winner for the DGA will be crowned a week earlier, on January 25th, and the Producers Guild will announce their winner on Saturday, January 18th.
