August 2019 presents a lineup of highly anticipated films. “Dora and the Lost City of Gold” offers a live-action twist to the beloved animated TV series. “Hobbs and Shaw,” a spin-off from the “Fast & Furious” series, promises high-octane action and humor. Additionally, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” showcases the story of an aging actor and his faithful stunt double in 1960s Los Angeles. “The Kitchen” explores a group of women taking over the Irish mob scene in Hell’s Kitchen. “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” brings to life a collection of horror stories..
The year is just skipping by, isn’t it? July was a big blockbuster month for movies given it is peak Summer season, but things are slowing down a bit in August. As we breathe the last air of summer and the leaves begin their descent, here are some of the biggest new movies to keep you occupied, with car and book lovers benefiting the most from this month’s offerings.
1. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw | 2nd August 2019
At this point I’ve lost count on the number of movies in The Fast And The Furious franchise. Is this number 7? Or 8? This is a spin-off, though; focused on Hobbs and Shaw’s narrative rather than Toretto and gang. When these characters were introduced into the franchise, it seemed inevitable that this would eventually happen. After all, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Jason Statham are two of the biggest names in the action movie landscape. Expect fast cars, lots of action, and pure, mindless entertainment.
2. Dora and the Lost City of Gold | 9th August 2019
Dora and her backpack are here to dazzle our screens, in her first live action movie. Isabela Moner, of Instant Family fame, plays the titular Dora. This live action version of Dora is a teenager, having to grapple with the challenges of high school as well as save her parents, on top of having to solve the mystery behind a lost Incan civilisation. Sounds like quite a full plate for the teen, but if anyone can do it, Dora can.
3. Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark | 9th August 2019
Now this addition looks like it will be an actual treat at the movies, especially with people like director André Øvredal (who directed the chilling horror flick The Autopsy of Jane Doe) and producer Guillermo Del Toro on board. The film is based on the children’s book of the same name, which some of us might remember reading during our younger days, much like R.L Stine’s Goosebumps. While the Goosebumps film failed to do anything special, Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark looks like a different beast altogether, maybe because the stakes are higher. Del Toro, during a sneak preview of the movie, said that “In [his] movies, kids do die. They are more frail, but at the same, more complex, and they see that darkness, and that extends to this movie.” There won’t be any blood, though, if that’s any consolation.
4. The Art of Racing in the Rain | 9th August 2019
Like Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark, this movie is also a book adaptation, and it is the second movie on the list that involves fast cars. The book and film use an interesting narrator, a dog named Enzo, who wishes to be reincarnated as a human, in particular a race car driving human. It is Enzo’s observations on human life that makes the book worth reading, since he is able to see things that we normally overlook. It remains to be seen if the movie can capture that essence the way the book did. Kevin Costner is the voice chosen for Enzo, with Milo Ventimiglia and Amanda Seyfried part of the cast as well.
5. Good Boys | 16th August 2019
Every movie with Seth Rogen on board is bound to be raunchy and R rated – R’s abound basically (The Lion King was an exception). Main character Max (Jacob Tremblay) gets invited for his first kissing party, and he hopes he will be able to use it to get close to his crush. Problem is, he doesn’t know how to kiss. Time to do some research, though this isn’t as easy as you think it would be. Earning the label of Superbad but with 12 year olds, early reviews have pegged this as a decently funny movie, even if all the jokes revolve around the kids being clueless about the vices they get exposed to.
