“Someone grabbed my butt and basically touched me inappropriately before,” he said during an interview with the independent. She added that she was “too scared to say anything at the time,” explaining that she was a senior team member on a project.
“I was too scared to rock the boat,” Bel explained. “I just avoided that person and it was fine, but what has really changed after MeToo is that you just know that you are protected.”
He continued, emphasizing the importance of the movement: “At the beginning of MeToo it was weird. For a while I felt protected because the men were fucking scared, which was also a good thing, but now everything has calmed down. People have learned, and it’s like there’s a new code of conduct.”
While she didn’t name the crew member she said behaved inappropriately, Bel highlighted a project where she felt safe on set: 2015. The diary of a teenager.. By comparison, other projects didn’t always come with the same sense of security.
“I’ve had a couple of bad cases, where everyone is too awkward to ask if you’re going to take your clothes off and you don’t have it spelled correctly in the contract,” she shared. “It’s a low-budget, independent, guerrilla-style shoot. You’re outside, and all of a sudden it’s the scene where you have to strip down and simulate sex, and then you find yourself doing it because you’re too scared to say no, with a young actor who probably felt just as uncomfortable.”
