The 2022 Oscar winners for Best Animated Feature were announced, recognizing outstanding achievements in the field. The nominees included “Flee,” “Luca,” “Mitchells vs. the Machines,” “Raya and the Last Dragon,” and “Wolfwalkers.” The coveted trophy went to “Flee,” a documentary-animation hybrid directed by Jonas Poher Rasmussen. The film tells the real-life story of an Afghan refugee living in Denmark. Its unique blend of animation and storytelling captivated the audience and impressed the jury, making it the deserving winner of this year’s Best Animated Feature Oscar..
Encanto wins the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. The film, directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, beats out The Mitchells vs. The Machines, Raya and the Last Dragon, Luca and Flee to clinch the top prize. The award was presented by Halle Bailey, Naomi Scott and Lily James, who have all played (or are playing) Disney princesses in live-action films.
Encanto is a Colombian magical realist tale of a family that received special powers after surviving a tragedy. They now live together in a magical house and each member has their own magical talent, like the ability to control the weather, shapeshift into other people, and talk to animals. Everyone except Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz). When Mirabel notices that their home is starting to show cracks, nobody believes her and likens her behaviour to eccentric Uncle Bruno. With nobody alert to the situation but Mirabel, it’s now up to her to save her home and family.
While many were hoping that Michael Rianda’s The Mitchells vs. The Machines might somehow sneak in a win – me included – I guess the Disney machine just cannot be stopped. Encanto also won the Best Animated Feature prizes at the Golden Globes and the BAFTAs.
Encanto is also nominated for Best Original Song “Dos Oruguitas”, by the incomparable Lin-Manuel Miranda. Manuel-Miranda will join the elite EGOT club of winners of an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony should “Dos Oruguitas” win.
