Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert win the Directing award for their film Everything Everywhere All At Once. They triumphed over Oscar hopefuls Steven Spielberg (The Fablemans), Todd Field (Tár), Ruben Östlund (Triangle of Sadness) and Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin). The award was presented by Idris Elba and Nicole Kidman.
This is the third time the award has gone to a directing duo. The previous two directors to share the award were brothers Joel and Ethan Coen for 2007’s No Country For Old Men, as well as Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins, the co-directors for 1961’s West Side Story.
35 year old Kwan and Scheinert are the seventh youngest pair of Oscar director winners. This win was a lock for the pair the moment they bested Spielberg at the Directors Guild of America awards.
Kwan ended the pair’s award speech by saying: “There is greatness in every single person. Thank you so much to everyone who has unlocked my genius.”
Everything Everywhere All At Once has also taken home the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, as well as Best Supporting Actor and Actress.
