The Best Director category at the 2022 Oscars featured an impressive lineup of talented filmmakers. The nominees included Denis Villeneuve for “Dune,” Jane Campion for “The Power of the Dog,” Kenneth Branagh for “Belfast,” Paul Thomas Anderson for “Licorice Pizza,” and Steven Spielberg for “West Side Story.” Ultimately, the award went to Jane Campion, making her the second woman ever to win Best Director at the Oscars. Campion’s film, “The Power of the Dog,” received critical acclaim for its storytelling and brilliant direction, solidifying her place among the industry’s most respected filmmakers..
Jane Campion wins the Directing award for her film The Power of the Dog. She is the third woman to win the Oscar for Directing; previous winners include Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker and Chloé Zhao for Nomadland. She triumphed over Oscar hopefuls Kenneth Branagh (Belfast), Ryusuke Hamaguchi (Drive My Car), Steven Spielberg (West Side Story) and Paul Thomas Anderson (Licorice Pizza). The award was presented by Kevin Costner.
Campion’s film is an immersive character study, anchored by powerful performances from Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee. Phil (Cumberbatch) and George (Plemons) are brothers trained in the ranching ways of Bronco Henry, a man Phil speaks of with reverence at every turn. Things take a turn for the worst when George marries Rose (Dunst), whose presence is unacceptable to Phil. He looks at Rose as a schemer and works exceptionally hard to unsettle her at every turn.
Campion has more or less been a lock for the Oscar since awards season started. She won the Directing award at the BAFTAs, the Golden Globes and the Writers Guild of America awards. She was previously nominated for the Directing Academy Award in 1994 for her film The Piano. That year’s winner was Steven Spielberg, for Schindler’s List, who was also nominated this year. I guess there’s a season for everything, and this season, the Oscar belongs to Jane Campion.
