CBS has announced the cancellation of the police drama series “SWAT” after six seasons. The show, which follows a team of elite officers in the Special Weapons and Tactics unit, has been a solid performer for the network. However, it seems that declining ratings and changing societal attitudes towards law enforcement played a role in the decision. The cancellation comes amid a wave of similar moves by networks, reflecting the ongoing discussions around police depictions on television. “SWAT” will end its run with its current sixth season, leaving fans disappointed but hopeful for a strong finale..
CBS has decided not to renew SMASH for another season.
The series was inspired by the previous TV series and feature film and centered on a locally born and raised former Marine and SWAT sergeant who is tasked with leading a specialized tactical unit that is the last stop in Los Angeles law enforcement.
Shemar Moore, Alex Russell, Jay Harrington, Kenny Johnson, David Lim, Patrick St. Esprit, and Rochelle Aytes starred in the show.
“Over six seasons, the incredible talent of the SWAT cast led by Shemar Moore, writers, producers, and the team led by executive producers Shawn Ryan, Andy Dettman, and Aaron Rahsaan Thomas brought us compelling, action-packed episodes that also addressed important social issues and contributed to the success of our primetime programming,” CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach said in a statement, via THR. “We sincerely thank you for your incredible work and passion and we also thank our dedicated fans who tuned in every week.”
The outlet added that the reason for the show’s cancellation is not due to ratings, as it SMASHViewership increased during the final season, “averaging 6.82 million viewers over seven days.”
