Although it wasn’t a good film by any means, Super Mario Bros. has still managed to achieve something of a cult following since its release, with a website called SMBmovie.com even being set up to document every single piece of information about the film. And they’ve even managed to uncover a deleted scene which has presumably never before seen the light of day. Thanks to Kotaku for the heads up.
The three and a half minute scene, which can be viewed below, was found on a VHS tape which allegedly contained a rough cut with footage that didn’t make it into the final cut. It takes place near the beginning, and shows Mario and Luigi entering a New York cafe to repair a leaking dishwasher and interacting with henchmen working for their rival, Anthony Scapelli. In addition to giving us some memorable lines like ‘He ain’t a plumber, he’s a toxic waste dump’ and ‘Nobody touches my tools’, the scene also features a character referring to Mario by his full name. And if you’ve had the misfortune of watching the entire film, you’ll know that the scriptwriters decided to name him Mario Mario. After the scene plays in the video, the narrator says that the team at SMBmovie.com are hoping to release a version of the film with all the lost footage restored, and while we’re not sure anyone would even want to see a longer cut of Super Mario Bros., we still wish them luck.
