Focus Features just released the official teaser trailer for Edgar Wright’s Last Night in Soho, teasing quite the mind trip that is in store for us.

What’s The Film About?

From the trailer, Thomasin McKenzie’s Eloise somehow finds herself transported back to the 1960s, where she becomes Anya Taylor-Joy’s Sandy, a wannabe singer whom she idolizes. Soon, we see Eloise, who is passionate about fashion design, incorporating elements of Sandy’s style into her own image. Initially, it seems that Eloise is able to access the world when she sleeps, but the past starts to mix in with the present, and things go from dream-like to horror-filled.

The trailer does this transition so well, leaving the viewer truly startled by the hands emerging from the ground and walls. The past is shady indeed. Wright’s film is reminiscent of a giallo film, with a woman in peril at the centre of things. Also, the use of vibrant, stylish colours, coupled with danger and sex, clearly places The Last Night in Soho in that distinctive genre.

Film Delays & the Pandemic

While Last Night in Soho was supposed to be released last year, Wright has been okay to delay the film’s release so that it could have its day in the cinema. “Me and the producers were behind the push, and Universal and Focus were in agreement,” Wright said. “They feel as well that we want to at least give it the chance to be in theaters and see it as it was intended to be. Obviously people will be able to watch it at home eventually.” He added: “I’d happily wait if there’s a chance to see it on the big screen because that’s how it was made to be seen.”

Last Night in Soho will release in theatres October 22, 2021.
