August 2023 seems to be a thrilling month for movie enthusiasts as several highly anticipated releases hit the big screen. One of the most exciting upcoming films is “Creature Mayhem,” a gripping tale that promises to captivate audiences. With its intriguing plot and stunning visuals, it looks set to be a major summer hit. However, “Creature Mayhem” is not alone in raising the excitement levels. Four other major movies are also expected to dominate the box office this month. With a wide range of genres to choose from, August 2023 is shaping up to be a fabulous cinematic experience for all..
After the highs of June and July, and the event that is Barbenheimer, August is going to feel a little dull in comparison. This isn’t to say that there aren’t any exciting new movies on the horizon. There’s still plenty to look forward to, but we might be too busy recovering from the exciting months prior – the anticipation isn’t as palpable.
Also, the more movie studios continue to refuse to give in to the unions, the more this is going to affect the movie industry moving forward. With no writers onboard and no actors to promote these films, we’re going to see lots of release dates get pushed to the following year. Hopefully we move towards a resolution, otherwise there’s very little to look forward to for the rest of 2023.
And on that bleak note, here are the biggest new movies of August 2023.
New Movies of July 2023
1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem | August 2nd, 2023
This movie currently stands at a strong 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, with 48 reviews, which is as promising as it can get. After years of being sheltered from the human world, the Turtle brothers set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers. But soon they are in over their heads when an army of mutants is unleashed upon them.
Most of the critics commend the film’s strong visuals and the fact that it offers a refreshing, modern take on the IP. Considering how many franchises have put out flaccid films this year, this is high praise indeed.
2. Meg 2: The Trench | August 4th, 2023
The most surprising thing about Meg 2: The Trench is that it’s directed by Ben Wheatley. The man’s known for films like High Rise, In the Earth and Kill List, so it feels strange that he’s taken on a blockbuster like this film. What does Wheatley have to say about this? Well, it’s because he loved the first film, and when the offer came to him, he felt it was an exciting opportunity and wanted to take it up.
The first film also did really well, grossing over US$530 million, so a sequel was pretty much a certainty after that. The Meg was based on Alten’s 1997 novel Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror. Two years later, Alten published the sequel novel, The Trench, which will be the basis for the new film.
Based on the book, The Trench picks off a few years after the original. Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) is studying a young megalodon held in captivity. Other members of the research teams discover another prehistoric creature, the Kronosaurus. Now, faced with this new creature in addition to the megalodons, Jonas has to work to keep things together.
3. Gran Turismo | August 11th, 2023
Gran Turismo is the most recent of several video game adaptations planned by Sony Pictures and PlayStation Studios. The movie is based on a true story. We have a struggling working-class gamer (Archie Madekwe), a failed former racecar driver (David Harbour), and the motorsport executive (Orlando Bloom), who come together as a team to take on the most elite sport in the world.
If you like racing and you like cars, then this is the movie for you.
4. Blue Beetle | August 18th, 2023
Moviegoers are still confused as to whether Blue Beetle is part of the DCU or not. Here’s the definitive answer from James Gunn himself. The character, played by Xolo Maridueña, will continue to exist in the DCU. The movie, however, is not part of the DCU, and still belongs to the DCEU. Hope that clears things up.
Recent college grad Jaime Reyes (Maridueña) returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his place in the world, he finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, transforming him into the hero known as Blue Beetle.
5. Bottoms | August 25th, 2023
The early reviews for Bottoms have been fantastic, with critics calling the movie an instant high school classic. This is director Emma Seligman’s sophomore film, with her first film being Shiva Baby, and it’s looking like this movie will be another homerun for her.
The film focuses on two girls, PJ (Rachel Sennott) and Josie (Ayo Edebiri), who start a fight club as a way to lose their virginities to cheerleaders. Their bizarre plan works. The fight club gains traction and soon the most popular girls in school are beating each other up in the name of self-defense. But of course, as with all fight clubs, the girls soon find themselves in over their heads, and need to think of a plan before they’re exposed.
