The Colorado women’s soccer team won’t get to ease into the start of their final run through the Pac-12 Conference with a league opening date next week against fifth-ranked, defending national champion UCLA.
Yet the Buffaloes made certain to finish nonconference play strong.
The 22nd-ranked Buffs traveled to Denver for their part of Colorado’s rivalry weekend and posted a 3-1 victory on Friday night in the nonconference finale. It was the seventh consecutive victory for CU (8-1), marking the program’s first win streak of that length since an eight-game win streak in 2018.
It also was the Buffs 12th consecutive victory against DU on the 10th anniversary of the Pioneers last win against CU, a 3-0 decision in Denver on Sept. 15, 2013. It was the first defeat of the season for DU (4-1-4).
CU took the lead on a pair of penalty kicks, first by Jade Babcock-Chi in the 27th minute and then Rachel Rosen in the 50th minute. The Pioneers pulled within a goal on their own penalty kick, converted by Kaitlyn Glover in the 59th minute, but James’ tally a little more than two minutes later reestablished a two-goal lead for the Buffs down the stretch.
It was the seventh goal of the season for James and the 32nd of her career. The senior forward reached another milestone, moving into a tie with Katie Griffin for fourth on CU’s all-time goals list. The two points lifted James’ career total to 69, nine shy of Griffin for fourth all-time.
It was the first goal of the season for Rosen, and with an assist on James’ goal she posted the second three-point game of her career.
Denver outpaced the Buffs in overall shots (18-10) and shots on goal (7-4), but CU goalie Jordan Nytes made six saves to keep the Buffs in control.
“I thought 2-0 we relaxed again and all of a sudden it is a 2-1 game,” CU head coach Danny Sanchez said in a release. “But it was a great serve by Rachel Rosen to (James) to kill the game off.
“Its tough to go on the road against a very experienced team that’s undefeated,” Sanchez said. “They are undefeated for a reason. You look at their results and they have been very good. I thought Jordan (Nytes) made the saves she needed to make and we did enough to win the game. It’s a great win for the Buffs and we’re super excited for next week against UCLA.”
CU begins Pac-12 play next Friday, Sept. 22, against No. 5 UCLA (7 p.m., Pac-12 Network).
