David Ayer, the director of Suicide Squad, has recently stated that completing his original cut of the film would be an effortless task. In a response to a fan’s inquiry on Twitter, Ayer expressed his confidence in having a completed version of the movie available. He mentioned that all the required visual effects work is already done and it just needs a few edits to align with his vision. Ayer’s original vision for Suicide Squad faced significant changes during the post-production process, which resulted in a different version being released in theaters..
David Ayer has been engaging with fans on Twitter, on his cut of Suicide Squad, given that Zack Synder’s cut of Justice League is going to make its way onto HBO Max. Responding to a tweet from Collider’s editor-in-chief Steven Weintraub, Ayer said: “My cut would be easy to complete. It would be incredibly cathartic for me. It’s exhausting getting your ass kicked for a film that got the Edward Scissorhands treatment. The film I made has never been seen.” In another tweet, Ayer notes that his cut is “simply better than what the public has seen – and yes it would make sense to update it.”
This is a good question. My cut would be easy to complete. It would be incredibly cathartic for me. It’s exhausting getting your ass kicked for a film that got the Edward Scissorhands treatment. The film I made has never been seen.

Of course. My cut isn’t the apotheosis of filmmaking. It’s simply better than what the public has seen – and yes it would make sense to update it.

Since the release of Suicide Squad, Ayer has been vocal about the changes he would make to the movie if he had a time machine, such as making the Joker the main villain and creating a more grounded story. There was also “a linear version [they] did where it opens up with June in the cave and tells the story in sequence with the arrests and Batman, and then [the film] go[es] to Belle Reve.” But test audiences were confused, so they used Amanda Waller and the dossiers to introduce the characters instead.
Ayer has frequently mentioned how most of Jared Leto’s work as Joker remains unseen due to edits. An example he gave was Joker’s scene with Tattoo (played by Common), which was meant to be an extended scene, where the Joker intimidates Tattoo into killing himself, instead of the version we got which was the Joker just shooting him in the head. It remains to be seen if Warner Bros. would greenlight Ayer’s cut, but with Synder’s cut finally seeing the light of the day, who knows what else is possible.
