Confirming the films last night, Christopher McQuarrie also revealed that he’d be returning to direct the next two instalments of the franchise, having previously worked on Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation and Mission Impossible: Fallout.
Interestingly, both films will be filmed back-to-back, implying they will both be heavily connected to one another, which raises the question: Will this be Ethan Hunt’s big send off? It’s no surprise that Cruise isn’t getting any younger, and that the filming of MI: Fallout took its toll on him. So an endgame for the character, potentially even the franchise, is on the cards with this duology.
McQuarrie’s work on the franchise gave it a new lease of life with overwhelmingly positive reviews when Rogue Nation dropped in 2015, becoming the most well received film of the franchise. He then furthered this momentum by creating the highest grossing film of the series in 2018, Fallout, which grossed an all-time high for the franchise of $791 million worldwide, and received even greater praise than before. THR revealed that McQuarrie had been in talks with Warner Bros. regarding his involvement with DC projects, but he turned them down in favour of Mission Impossible.
