In a recent interview, Dave Bautista, who portrays Drax in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, opened up about his character’s dissatisfaction with Thanos’ death. Bautista revealed that Drax’s sole purpose was to avenge his family’s murder at the hands of Thanos, and with the Mad Titan gone, he now feels lost. According to Bautista, Drax is left with an empty void and without a clear purpose. This insight provides a glimpse into Drax’s emotional journey and the challenges he will face in finding a new reason to continue his fight..
In an interview with GQ, Dave Bautista revealed that his character Drax feels a little unsatisfied that the mad titan’s death in Avengers: Endgame wasn’t by his hand. As we know, Drax has been seeking vengeance for the death of his family, which he ascribed to Ronan, until he discovered that Ronan was a mere errand boy for Thanos.
Drax wasn’t the only one who had a bone to pick with Thanos, and narrative-wise, it made more sense for Thor to kill the present day Thanos, given his devastation of Thor’s people and his brother Loki. Avengers: Endgame was the conclusion of Tony’s journey, so of course the gauntlet (quite literally) fell to him to put an end to the past version of Thanos. In the comics, Drax actually gets to defeat Thanos, tearing his heart out of his chest during the Annihilation crossover.
Bautista is convinced that director James Gunn, who has returned to the Guardians franchise after being let go, will figure out Drax’s next nemesis. The actor says that Gunn “is super creative, and he’s also a fan so he will dig through and come up with a new villain and something for Drax”. The third Guardians movie is set to begin filming in 2020, so we will most likely get more news by then. It might even come as early as the San Diego Comic Con this year, with Marvel Studios returning to Hall H.
