The latest film starring Ben Affleck, “The Way Back,” is set to have an early release on video on demand (VOD) platforms as a result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The film, which follows a former basketball star struggling with addiction as he becomes a coach at his former high school, had a limited theatrical release before social distancing measures shut down cinemas. Now, viewers will have the opportunity to watch the emotional sports drama from the comfort of their homes. This move aligns with Hollywood’s adaptation to the current situation by providing entertainment through digital platforms..
According to Variety, Warner Bros. is giving Ben Affleck’s The Way Back an early video on demand (VOD) release on March 24, 2020. It is the 7th film, among the movies that have already been released in theatres, to have an early VOD release.
The other films are K.J Apa’s faith-based romance film I Still Believe, Vin Diesel’s Bloodshot, Margot Robbie’s Birds of Prey, The Hunt, The Invisible Man and Emma. Before the coronavirus pandemic, most theatrical releases were not available to be watched at home until roughly 90 days after they premiered in cinemas, but of course this has all changed now.
“With audiences largely unable to view films in theatrical release under current circumstances, we have decided to provide the alternative of early digital ownership of our currently released titles to people looking for great entertainment options,” said Toby Emmerich, chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, in a statement. “So, while we remain big fans of the theatrical experience and hope audiences are able to return to cinemas in the near future, we understand that these are challenging times and offering this option simply makes sense.”
The coronavirus continues to wage its war on the film industry, affecting film releases as far back as July, with Minions: The Rise of Gru, which had a July 3rd release date, being pulled from theatrical release. This means movie studios are expecting this situation to continue well into summer, which is one of the busiest times of year for movies.
