This content suggests that there is an abundance of action in a certain subject, and it possesses potential to win an Oscar..
December may be the month of Christmas and gift giving, but November this year is really the gift of film. There are so many widely anticipated films coming out this month, so much so that I had a hard time picking out the five that would be the biggest contenders. This list is always a mixture of blockbusters, as well as films that have gotten immense buzz in the film festival circuit this year.
I feel like I should also mention Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City will be released on November 24, 2021, since this a franchise that has a following. And for those looking for family-friendly movies to watch, Clifford the Big Red Dog will be released November 10, 2021. Like I said, too many movies worthy of mention, but only five worthy enough to make the list. Here are the 5 biggest new movies of November 2021.
November 2021 New Movies
1. Eternals | November 5th, 2021
Eternals has made the news recently, since it’s one of the few Marvel movies to not perform well in early reviews.
Currently, it stands at 60% with 121 reviews, which isn’t great news for Kevin Feige and gang. It’s especially incongruent, given that director Chloé Zhao is coming off an extremely successful Oscar season with her film Nomadland. The reason behind the polarising reviews – with some loving it and others really hating it – is mainly due to Zhao’s deviation from the usual Marvel formula.
We’ve come to expect certain things in a Marvel film, and Zhao’s vision will not be appreciated by all. Still, I am curious to see for myself and come to my own conclusions. Regardless of the reviews, this film will still make bank, for the star-studded cast and for the sheer fact that it is a Marvel film.
2. Spencer | November 5th, 2021
In contrast to Eternals, Pablo Larraín’s Spencer has received an immensely positive reception at various film festivals, with many praising Kristen Stewart’s portrayal of Diana. Spencer is an imagining of what might have happened during those few fateful days at the Queen’s Sandringham Estate, as everyone gathered for Christmas festivities, and Diane was faced with a life-changing decision.
Usually, Spencer is the type of film that will get buzz during awards season, but wouldn’t make much headway amongst the masses – it isn’t a blockbuster in the way Eternals is.
However, I do think because of the Princess Diana subject matter that many will be curious enough to check it out. Years after her death, so many of us still can’t get enough of Diana – the reception and interest in The Crown: Season 4 is an example of that. Stewart also has her own fanbase, and her performance will be the main draw for the film.
3. Red Notice | November 5th, 2021
Having Gal Gadot, Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds almost guarantees box office draw. I don’t think Red Notice will be great, but I am certain people will still watch it anyway just to see these three in action.
Johnson plays special agent John Hartley, who was framed by Gadot’s Sarah Black, and went down for a crime he didn’t commit. Now, he’s teaming up with art thief Nolan Booth (Reynolds) to take down Sarah, to restore his reputation, and for Nolan, he gets to be number one again.
It looks like dumb action fun, and hey, it will be released on Netflix as well, on November 12th, so if you don’t want to head down to the theatre to watch, you can experience the fun right in your very own home.
4. Ghostbusters: Afterlife | November 19th, 2021
Ghostbusters: Afterlife is the latest attempt to breathe life back into the franchise again (we’re apparently ignoring the previous female Ghostbusters, despite its positive reviews), in a bid to bring a whole new generation to the series.
The early reviews are mixed but largely positive, with some stating that this new film “will keep the torch burning bright for the future of the franchise,” while others feel it’s just “lazy fan service”. We’ll get a better idea of which side it falls on upon release, but the fact that it’s a Ghostbusters film anchored by Jason Reitman (son to Ivan Reitman who helmed the original) means the fans will certainly turn up.
In addition to that, with a cast that comprises of actors like Paul Rudd and Finn Wolfhard, both of whom are a part of franchises that are immensely popular (Rudd and Marvel, Wolfhard and Stranger Things), this should pull people to the cinema to check it out.
5. House of Gucci | November 24th, 2021
House of Gucci is inspired by the shocking true story of the family empire behind the Italian fashion house of Gucci. Spanning three decades of love, betrayal, decadence, revenge, and ultimately murder, we see what a name means, what it’s worth, and how far a family will go for control. The film’s release is meant to coincide with Gucci’s 100th anniversary.
For me, the main draw is the cast. We have Lady Gaga and Adam Driver in the lead roles, and others like Jared Leto (who is unrecognisable in this0, Jeremy Irons and Salma Hayek. It’s been an amazing year for Driver, having been a part of films like Annette and The Last Duel this year as well. I can’t wait to see how the film turns out.
