Basketball superstar LeBron James has confirmed that filming for the highly anticipated sequel, Space Jam 2, has officially begun. The original film, released in 1996, starred Michael Jordan and became a beloved classic. James will now take on the lead role, joining a cast that includes NBA players and other celebrities. The film is being directed by Malcolm D. Lee and produced by Ryan Coogler. Space Jam 2 has generated significant buzz, with fans eagerly anticipating its release and hoping it lives up to the legacy of the original..
LeBron James confirmed on Twitter that Space Jam 2 has finally started filming. The long awaited sequel is now shooting in California, and is being directed by Terence Nance, with Black Panther’s Ryan Coogler producing. Warner Bros. will release the film on July 16, 2021, and you can view James’ tweet below.
It may seem hard to believe, but Space Jam 2 will actually be the first theatrically released Looney Tunes film since Back in Action all the way back in 2003. In the original Space Jam, Michael Jordan was roped into helping the Looney Tunes characters compete in a tournament against the dreaded Monstars, and while the film was despised by Looney Tunes co-creator Chuck Jones, it was a box office hit when it arrived in theatres in 1996, and also generated around $6 billion in merchandising revenue. So it honestly comes as a surprise that Warner Bros. waited over two decades to make a sequel.
As well as James, who plays the lead role, Space Jam 2 will also star Sonequa Martin-Green, who is perhaps best known for her role as Michael Burnham in Star Trek: Discovery. Surprisingly, many other NBA stars were reluctant to appear, so we’re not sure at this point which other basketball players we can expect to see in the film. We also don’t know much about the plot at this point, other than that it will once again involve Looney Tunes characters competing in a basketball tournament.
However, we do know that Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck will be voiced by Eric Bouza, who recently started voicing the characters in this year’s Looney Tunes Cartoons TV series. While other details are scarce at this point, Looney Tunes fans will no doubt be delighted to see the franchise on the big screen again when Space Jam 2 opens in wide release next summer. Warner Bros. clearly have a guaranteed hit on their hands.
