Florida is preparing for a Category 3 storm as it braces itself for the potential impact of Hurricane Isaias. Due to the storm’s trajectory, several counties have issued evacuation orders, while others have opened shelters for residents. The state is taking precautions, such as closing COVID-19 testing sites to ensure the safety of both the individuals being tested and the testing sites themselves. Additionally, residents are urged to have a disaster supply kit, review their hurricane emergency plans, and stay informed about the storm’s updates through reliable sources. Authorities are actively monitoring the situation and urging everyone to take necessary precautions..
“I think as we get into the late Tuesday, early Wednesday, it’s going to start to get really nasty, and, of course, they’re anticipating a landfall sometime Wednesday morning, Wednesday afternoon,” DeSantis said at a Monday press conference.
“So you have time to make the preparations, you have time to do what you need to do to protect yourself and your family,” the governor added.
President Biden was in communication with DeSantis, a vocal Biden critic and 2024 Republican presidential hopeful, early this week, according to the White House.
“President Biden said Florida will have his full support as they prepare for Idalia and its aftermath,” the White House said in a statement.
“President Biden also expressed his commitment to ongoing support for the people of Jacksonville following the horrific shooting on Saturday,” the White House added, referencing a racist mass shooting that targeted Black shoppers in a grocery store over the weekend.
Compounding concerns, the state Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services warned Sunday that, as the storm approaches, fuel at nearly 30 Tampa-area gas stations has a “strong likelihood of being contaminated.”
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis issued a warning about the impending arrival of Hurricane Idalia, stating that the situation will deteriorate and a landfall is expected on Wednesday. He urged residents to take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their families. Despite their political differences, President Biden assured DeSantis of his support and offered ongoing assistance for the aftermath of the hurricane. The White House also mentioned Biden’s commitment to supporting the people of Jacksonville following a racist mass shooting that occurred recently. In addition, the state Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services raised concerns about potential fuel contamination at various Tampa-area gas stations.
