Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt dressed the building of his office in Topeka with blue lights to show support for Israel amid the recent conflict in Gaza. The gesture was praised by members of the Kansas Republican Party, who commended his solidarity with Israel. Republican congressional members from Kansas, including Senators Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall, also criticized President Joe Biden’s approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. They accused Biden of not doing enough to support Israel and failing to acknowledge the threat posed by Hamas. The actions of both Schmidt and the GOP politicians reflect their strong pro-Israel stance..
TOPEKA — Attorney General Kris Kobach had the Memorial Hall office building lit in blue and white to reflect support for Israel in the escalating conflict with Hamas militants who launched an invasion from Gaza that has led to kidnapping of civilians and more than 1,000 fatalities.
The state office building across the street from the Capitol is used by personnel of the Kansas attorney general and secretary of state.
“Kansas must stand united with Israel, our democratic ally in the Middle East. The terrorists who attacked Israel hate America, too,” Kobach said. “We must stand with our friends in Israel and recognize that the United States is a target as well.”
U.S. Sen. Roger Marshall and U.S. Rep. Ron Estes, both Kansas Republicans, pledged to maintain their support of Israel and were critical of President Joe Biden’s approach to foreign policy.
“For many of us it’s a personal, spiritual issue,” Marshall said. “I think most every member of Congress realizes how important Israel is to our national security. So, you’ll see us circle the wagons here and support Israel. And, most importantly, we believe that Israel has every right to defend their own nation, to defend their sovereignty.”
Marshall alleged Biden administration “turned” on Israel by releasing $6 billion in frozen assets to Iran in exchange for release of detained Americans. The agreement place the money under controlled of the Qatar government for release to Iran for payment of humanitarian purchases such as medicine and food.
“Don’t listen to what Joe Biden says, watch what he does,” Marshall said. “He turned his back on Israel. He supports Iran as well over and over again.”
Estes, who represents Wichita and the 4th District in the U.S. House, condemned the assault against one of the United States’ strongest allies and asserted there was evidence Iran “had a significant role in planning the brutal attacks.”
He said the violence illustrated failure of Biden’s foreign policy and success of President Donald Trump in international affairs. Biden, a Democrat, is seeking reelection in 2024. Trump is the leading candidate for the Republican Party’s nomination for president.
“With destabilizing crises around the globe,” Estes said, “the Biden administration appears to be asleep at the wheel once again.”
