Could hope be running out in Hope Valley? All good things come to an end and after almost a decade on Hallmark Channel, there’s always a fear that When Calls the Heart could be cancelled and leave Hearties’ screens forever.
When Calls the Heart premiered on Hallmark Channel on January 11, 2014. The series, which was based on Janette Oke’s book of the same name and started as a Hallmark original movie in October 2013, follows Elizabeth Thatcher, a young teacher accustomed to high-society life who moves to Coal Valley, a small coal-ming town in Western Canada just south of Robb, Alberta, for her first classroom job. At the end of the Season 2 premiere, the town is renamed Hope Valley.
“It’s kind of like lightning in a bottle because you just want to hold onto it because we know we have something very unique and very special. So personally, I try to wake up every morning and come to set feeling very grateful that I get to continue doing this job that I love so much,” Erin Krakow, who’s played Elizabeth since Season 1, told Southern Living in 2023 about When Calls the Heart‘s success.
With 10 seasons under its belt and countless stories told, fans can’t help but wonder: How long will When Calls the Heart air? Read on for what the series’ executive producer said about when When Calls the Heart could be cancelled and end.
Is When Calls the Heart cancelled?
Is When Calls the Heart canceled? The answer is no — and it doesn’t look like the end is near either. At the Hearties Family Reunion event on September 22, 2023, Brian Bird, the executive producer of When Calls the Heart, revealed how long he expects When Calls the Heart to air for.
“As I’ve said many times over the last decade, you Hearties are the reason for the show. I think one of the big reasons that the show is still going strong is all of you,” he said. “And I believe that long after the show has ended its run — which we hope is many, many seasons from now; we’re going to try to catch up with The Simpsons, which is in season 42 or something like that, so you got a ways to go [but] we’re going to try…you will still be here.”
Many fans agreed with Bird’s plan to continue When Calls the Heart for years to come. “My wish is for When Calls the Heart to continue for many seasons,” a user commented on Hallmark Channel’s official Instagram account’s video of Bird’s speech. Another user wrote, “Thank you for making my day! I hope the series lasts for many years!” One more user wrote, “LOVE When Calls the Heart!!! Hope it stays on for a very long time!”
Despite his wishes, Bird explained during his speech that the decision to continue When Calls the Heart isn’t entirely up to him. “The network orders a certain number of episodes. We, the production company, produce those episodes for the network. So, it’s really not up to us how many,” he said. “There’s also something to be said for the anticipation. You know, you love the show so much. You can’t wait till it returns and so there’s this incredible anticipation while that’s happening.”
Will there be a Season 11 of When Calls the Heart?
Will there be a Season 11 of When Calls the Heart? The answer is yes. Hallmark Channel renewed When Calls the Heart for a 12-episode 11th season in February 2023.
“I am beyond excited for Season 10 of When Calls the Heart to premiere July 30,” star Erin Krakow, who plays Elizabeth Thatcher Thornton, said in a statement at the time. “This season is full of beautiful moments and exciting twists and turns. I can’t wait for the Hearties to see what we’ve created for them! And I’m so thrilled, proud and grateful to Hallmark that the show has been renewed for Season 11. We have so many more stories to tell. With our amazing cast, crew, and brilliant writers, there will be no shortage of romance and new adventures for the residents of Hope Valley! Having the Hearties continue this journey with us has meant the world and we are thrilled to share what’s in store these next two seasons!”
Hallmark EVP of programming Lisa Hamilton Daly continued in her own statement, “When Calls the Heart has continued to be a standout amongst our Hallmark catalogue and we’re thrilled that we’re able to bring more stories of faith and community to the homes of millions of viewers. The uplifting nature of the show paired with the love and positivity in the storytelling makes for a very heartwarming television experience and it’s only going to get bigger and better in Season 11.”
In an interview with Southern Living in July 2023, Krakow looked back on her decade on When Calls the Heart. “I’m really very grateful for it because it’s not an opportunity that most people get. I’m so grateful that Hallmark Channel continues to keep When Calls the Heart alive because it’s given all of us this opportunity. It’s also really nice for our viewers to get to see these characters, to see their journeys over the course of what will have been 11 years by the end of season 11 and hopefully there’s more to come,” Krakow said
She continued, “I cannot say enough how grateful I am. There’s an element of risk and chance that comes with taking the leap of being an actor and making that one’s career. And it doesn’t often come with, let’s call it job security. It has been really nice to have this really good job for the past decade. And in addition to getting to play a part that I really care about. I get to work with people on set and off who I really care about. It is such a positive workplace full of people who have become some of my best friends and that’s just on set. But working with our writers, executives at the network, they’re all incredible people who have become dear friends as well. It’s just a really good, positive team, and very collaborative.”
Krakow also explained how the When Calls the Heart cast has become family after more than a decade together. “We are a group of people who choose, we’re spending 14-hour days together on set and we still want to spend time together on weekends and on hiatus. Doing game nights and traveling together. And we’re filming community dinners in WCTH and then having community dinners on Saturdays because we just like each other,” she said.
Krakow also teased Season 10 of When Calls the Heart, which came after Season 9’s cliffhanger finale, in which Elizabeth got engaged to Lucas Bouchard. “She got a giant rock at the end of season 9, huh,” Krakow said. “I am trying to keep some things secret. We want to be able to have some surprises but I can say when we come back in season 10 there is some very fun wedding planning happening. Cake tasting and all that.”
In her interview with Southern Living, Krakow also looked back at Elizabeth’s 10 seasons in Hope Valley. “She comes to this town, this young woman from a privileged upbringing. She’s really out of her element. Fish out of water here and over the course of ten seasons she finds her footing as a frontier woman,” she said. “She creates some really strong friendships. She really cements herself as a pillar in the community. She finds love. She gets engaged, she gets married, she gets pregnant. She loses her husband, she has a baby, she’s trying to balance single motherhood with being a teacher. She ends up in a love triangle. She finds love again, gets engaged again. I mean, it’s been a journey.”
She continued, “There has been a lot that has happened to Elizabeth and a lot that she has been an active part in making happen in her life. But I will say it’s a new adventure and a new challenge with every passing season. So I never get bored. It’s really been nice to get to play this person for whom life is not perfect and glossy. It comes with very real challenges that I think a lot of our viewers can relate to.”
