Gunshots estimated in the hundreds were heard in the area Wednesday. Pittsburgh Public Safety confirms that the suspect in this standoff was pronounced by medics on the scene at 5:08 p.m. State police continue to ask the public to avoid the 4800 block of Broad Street and North Mathilda Street. Trooper Rocco Gagliardi said, “the work is just beginning” with this investigation, and police are working to make sure the neighborhood is safe for residents to return to.Pittsburgh Public Safety first posted on social media post just after 11 a.m. Wednesday, alerting the public to an active shooter situation. A follow-up post said, “This is an extremely active situation with shots continuing to be fired. Please avoid the area at this time.” “The active scene in Garfield began this morning when a detail from our office attempted to serve an eviction notice, which was followed by gunfire from the occupant of the residence. He also did not comment on what weapons the suspect might have had at his disposal. Chief Scirotto said personnel from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Federal Bureau of Investigation were involved in Wednesday’s response.
