Iowa First Gentleman Kevin Reynolds has been diagnosed with lung cancer, Gov. Kim Reynolds announced Thursday.
“We’re grateful to the incredible medical team caring for Kevin,” Kim Reynolds said in a statement. “Our doctor has assured us that significant advancements in lung cancer treatment have been very effective and we have every reason to be optimistic. We are confident in our team as we begin treatment, and we will beat this together.”
Kevin and Kim Reynolds first met in high school and were married in 1982. They have three daughters and 11 grandchildren. Kevin Reynolds became Iowa’s first-ever first gentleman when Kim Reynolds ascended to the governorship in 2017.
“Kevin has been my anchor throughout our 41 years of marriage, and I will be the same for him as he begins treatment,” Kim Reynolds said. “We are blessed to be surrounded by a loving family and a community of prayer warriors. We know God is with us on this journey.”
Kevin Reynolds is an avid outdoorsman who cares deeply about soil health and water quality, according to his biography on the governor’s website.
“As first gentleman, he is also actively engaged in educating Iowans of all ages about the state’s many treasured natural resources,” the biography states.
He also sits on the Terrace Hill Commission, a nine-person board appointed by the governor that oversees the preservation, maintenance, renovation and administration of Terrace Hill, the Iowa governor’s mansion.
Kevin Reynolds was born in Osceola and has a bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University in agronomy. He worked on soil and water conservation as a county resource planner with Pottawattamie County and went on to work as a soil conservationist and district conservationist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture before retiring in 2017, according to his biography.
