Rumors are swirling that Timothée Chalamet could be the next actor to take on the iconic role of Willy Wonka. After Warner Bros. announced plans for another Wonka movie, fans of the actor and the franchise have started speculating about the possibility. Chalamet, known for his critically acclaimed performances, has gained a massive following, making him a popular choice for the whimsical character. While nothing has been confirmed yet, the news has generated excitement among fans who are eager to see Chalamet bring his unique charm to the role of Willy Wonka..
According to Variety, Warner Bros. is considered Timothée Chalamet for the lead role of Willy Wonka in a prequel to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Who’s Involved?
The studio has been developing the prequel, titled ‘Wonka’, for nearly five years, and while plot details are being kept under wraps, we know that the project will be helmed by Paul King (he directed Paddington), and the script has been penned by American Pickle writer Simon Rich. Tom Holland is also being considered for the lead role – why does it feel like Chalamet and Holland are in nearly every movie these days?
Chalamet v. Holland
However, it is no surprise that these are the two actors being considered, since the character of Willy Wonka has always been taken on by A-listers. Gene Wilder played the character in the 1973 version, while Johnny Depp did his thing in 2005. Both Chalamet and Holland are part of blockbuster franchises: Chalamet is the lead character in Dune, and Holland is Spider-Man. The two actors have also taken on their fair share of dramatic work, and Chalamet even has an Oscar nomination (which he received for Call Me By Your Name) under his belt.
The prequel is currently scheduled to hit cinemas on March 17, 2023, with production due to start in the next four months. So, I guess we’ll find out before then who the next chocolatier will be.
