A teaser trailer for Janelle Monáe’s forthcoming film, “Antebellum,” offers an unsettling glimpse into the mysterious plot. The 30-second clip showcases eerie scenery, haunting music, and a dramatic escape scene. Monáe is seen playing two different characters, one in the present day and another in the pre-Civil War era. The trailer leaves viewers with many questions, rewarding anticipation for the full release. The film, directed by Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz, explores themes of race and slavery, promising an intense and thought-provoking viewing experience..
Lionsgate just released the teaser trailer for Janelle Monáe’s upcoming film Antebellum, and while it looks creepy and unsettling (as horror movies should be), the trailer doesn’t really offer much clarity on what the film is about. All we get is a brief synopsis from Vanity Fair, which states that the film is about author Veronica Henley, played by Monáe, who finds herself trapped in a horrifying reality, needing to uncover the mind-bending mystery before it’s too late.
I don’t know about you, but that certainly doesn’t help much. Clearly the film’s marketing is doused in ambiguity because they want to build anticipation for the film, following in the footsteps of Us and Midsommar, which had smart trailers that didn’t give away the game.
What we do know about the film is that it is directed and written by Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz, who are known for tackling social issues in their work. The movie seems to toggle between a modern setting and the pre-American Civil War period. I think Monáe’s character may have been in the midst of doing research into this time period for a book she’s writing, and suddenly finds herself sucked into that past. Of course this is all conjecture, so don’t take my word for it.
Antebellum will arrive in theatres April 24, 2020.
