The highly-acclaimed film “Joker” has received a staggering 11 nominations for the upcoming Academy Awards. This recognition propels the film, centered around the iconic villain from DC Comics, into the spotlight as a frontrunner for numerous prestigious categories. Joaquin Phoenix’s mesmerizing performance in the lead role has earned him a nomination for Best Actor, while Todd Phillips is nominated for Best Director. “Joker” also secured nominations for its cinematography, costume design, film editing, original score, sound editing, sound mixing, adapted screenplay, makeup and hairstyling, and best picture. With these nominations, “Joker” triumphs as a groundbreaking and powerful film capturing audiences’ attention..
The voters of the British Academy of Film and Television have handed out their nominations, and like many, I was shocked to see the film that landed the most nominations was not the one we expected. Joker bested The Irishman, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and 1917 with 11 nominations, including Film, Director, Actor, and Adapted Screenplay. It also scored in the new Casting category.
Elsewhere, The Irishman stands with 10 nominations, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and 1917 tied for third-most with 9 nominations. Also worth mentioning is Parasite, which qualified despite not opening wide in the UK until late next month, landing 4 nominations, including Best Film and Director. We’ll have some more analysis when we I list off my final nominees at the Oscars and how BAFTA affected my decisions.
