CHAMPAIGN — Illinois football will largely be healthy entering the first training camp practice on Thursday night.
Head coach Bret Bielema said sophomore safety Matthew Bailey, a projected starter; offensive lineman Dez’Mond Schuster, a junior college transfer; and redshirt freshman outside linebacker Jared Badie will not participate in Thursday’s practice. Bailey and Badie will be out for at least a week.
Bailey, who had a breakout freshman year, is projected to start at one of the safety spots and will be sidelined for the start of camp as he recovers from a spring foot injury, which also held him out of spring practices. Bailey was seen with a walking boot on his foot in the spring. Bielema sounded optimistic that Bailey would return before the Sept. 2 opener against Toledo.
“Matt Bailey has a checkup literally in a couple days,” Bielema said. “If that gets all cleared then we’ll see where he can go, but expect him to be back a couple weeks out, two to three weeks back from our opener.”
Schuster’s status is a bit more uncertain. He arrived on campus from Hutchinson Community College during the summer — missing spring practices — and will not be available for the start of fall camp.
“Dez Schuster has reported and is fully able to go, anything from a compliance standpoint and all that goes into it, there are just some follow-up things he has to do to be able to fully participate in our practices,” Bielema said. “That’s just strictly a physical thing that we’re waiting on and trying to get some clarity. We’ll have more on that as we go forward.”
Illinois football coach Bret Bielema has announced that several players will not be participating in the team’s first training camp practice. Sophomore safety Matthew Bailey, offensive lineman Dez’Mond Schuster, and redshirt freshman outside linebacker Jared Badie will all be sidelined for at least a week. Bailey is recovering from a foot injury that also kept him out of spring practices, but Bielema is optimistic that he will return before the team’s opener on September 2. Schuster’s status is more uncertain as he still needs to complete some physical requirements before he can fully participate.
