Universal Pictures has become the new home for the Lego Movie franchise after years of being with Warner Bros. The franchise, which includes The Lego Movie, The Lego Batman Movie, and The Lego Ninjago Movie, has been a huge success with both critics and audiences. The move to Universal is seen as a strategic one as they have been expanding their animation division with films like Despicable Me and The Secret Life of Pets. The partnership is expected to bring exciting new possibilities for the franchise and fans can look forward to more Lego movies in the future..
According to Deadline, Universal Pictures has confirmed a five year exclusive deal with the LEGO Group that will lead to the development, production and theatrical distribution of films that revolve around these colourful building blocks. Universal established themselves as the leader of the pack last year amongst other movie studios who were also chasing after this deal.
As we saw with the Lego movies produced by Warner Bros, this franchise is a box office draw (the original LEGO films grossed a combined $1.1 billion globally), and when Warner Bros decided to let its deal with the Lego group expire, other movie studios were quick to enter the game to get a slice of the pie.
While this new deal with Universal means that future Lego movies cannot tap on any of the Warner Bros’ IP, such as Batman or Harry Potter, Universal has quite a host of properties to choose from as well, like Jurassic Park or any of the classic monsters in their arsenal.
The deal was spearheaded by Donna Langley, Chairman of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, and Jill Wilfert, Head of Entertainment of the LEGO Group. “The LEGO System in Play gives people the ability to build worlds and create stories that they carry throughout every phase of their lives,” said Langley. “To partner with such an iconic brand that remains relevant and is constantly evolving allows for creativity in storytelling. We’re thrilled to start building out the next chapter of LEGO movies together with Jill and the LEGO team as they continue to inspire curiosity and innovation.”
Let’s hope everything will continue to be awesome over at Universal.
