Lionsgate, the film production company, has made the decision to remove three highly-anticipated movies from their theatrical release schedule. The reboot of the popular horror franchise “Saw,” the thriller “Antebellum,” and the psychological thriller “Run” starring Sarah Paulson have all been affected by this move. This decision comes in response to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which has severely impacted the film industry. Lionsgate joins other major studios in postponing or altering their release plans as theaters across the world remain closed, presenting a significant challenge for movie studios looking to premiere their projects to audiences..
According to Variety, Lionsgate is also pulling all its April and May films from theatrical release, which includes Saw reboot Spiral: From the Book of Saw (May 15), Janelle Monáe’s Antebellum (April 23), and Sarah Paulson’s Run (May 7). Lionsgate commented that the three films will remain undated for the time being, until there is more clarity on when theatres will safely resume operations.
Lionsgate made these moves after Disney removed a whole host of other movies from theatrical release this week. Last week Disney decided to remove Mulan, Antlers and The New Mutants from theatrical release. Now, these are not the only movies affected, with Dev Patel’s The Personal History of David Copperfield and Amy Adam’s The Woman in the Window also being removed from the list of scheduled releases. The most shocking removal is Marvel’s Black Widow, which was still committing to the May 1st release date, until a few hours ago when Disney decided it needed to be pulled from theatrical release as well.
Black Widow is the first movie to kick off Marvel’s phase 4, and now that it is pushed back, fans are wondering if this could affect the MCU timeline, given how interwoven films are in the MCU. But fret not, Variety reports that because Black Widow is a prequel, this delay won’t have much of an impact on Marvel’s phase 4. However, we aren’t sure if this is because it is a stand-alone film, or if that Disney still expects to release everything in the appropriate order.
