LOREN MacFadyen acknowledges that he is “totally guilty” of binge-watching. Even if he adds that he enjoys the weekly tension of a good thriller, he has fallen into the same trap as so many of us by finding himself on episode 10 when you simply started the series that exact same day.
Fortunately, Malpractice, the new series starring the Scottish actor, appeals to both demographics. The first episode will run tonight on ITV at 9 p.m. For those who wish to keep the suspense alive, the remaining episodes will air each week on ITVX.
It centres on Dr. Lucinda Edwards (Niamh Algar), an experienced A&E physician who is dealing with a nightmarish shift that includes dealing with a gunshot victim and a patient who has overdosed on opioids. When one of them passes away, medical investigation unit detectives are called to determine whether Edwards is still qualified to practise medicine.
It’s created by the same group as Line Of Duty, which, as MacFadyen puts it, has led to “non-stop nail-biting” action. The 32-year-old actor, who is from Skye, was lured to his job as Edwards’ husband Tom in part because of a family link.
He explained to The National that because both his mother and sister work as emergency room nurses, “doing something in that setting is personally very important to me. To play someone who is a support for someone who works that job, I felt like I could slot into that pretty easily.”
He says that initially, he was lured to the project because Philip Barantini, who directed the dramatic, one-shot kitchen drama Boiling Point, was involved.
I’ve seen that movie previously, and I was impressed with how nicely he handled the tension. I was quite impressed by Boiling Point for a first feature. That was one draw, but reading Grace Ofori-Attah’s writing was a page-turner that didn’t stop till the end.
He explains that as he has gotten older and wiser, he prefers a character he can relate to than one he can ignore. Even though MacFadyen can’t yet claim to experience all of Tom, the family connection was very helpful.
It was simpler to comprehend and empathise with him, he said. However, since I’m not a father, which is a different responsibility, there were some things I had to imagine. However, it can be difficult to distinguish between yourself and the character when you’re portraying something that’s close to you. Despite this, I find it to be a challenge that I enjoy.
