Idris Elba has hinted at a potential film adaptation of the hit TV series “Luther,” fueling excitement among fans. During an interview, Elba revealed that he and the team behind the show are in the early stages of developing a movie version. He mentioned that the goal is to take the role of detective John Luther to the big screen and explore a new chapter in the character’s life. Elba, who has been widely praised for his portrayal of Luther, expressed his enthusiasm for bringing the show’s intense storytelling and complex character to a cinematic experience..
Speaking at a press event for his semi-autobiographical comedy series In The Long Run, Idris Elba claimed “we are this close to making a film of Luther”.
Luther, which starred Elba as the titular troubled detective, ran for five seasons between 2010 and 2019, revolving in large part around the odd-couple relationship between Luther and murderer Alice Morgan, played by Ruth Wilson. Elba has won a number of awards for this role.
While Elba also confirmed there were no plans for further seasons, he added “I’ve made it very clear that I’d like to see Luther come back as a film.” And certainly, this is not the first time he has raised the idea of a film adaptation – as early as 2011, he suggested “That’s where the ultimate Luther story will unfold is in the big silver screen — London as a huge backdrop and a very menacing, horrible character to play against.”
More recently, speaking with Metro in 2018, he said that Luther showrunner Neil Cross was “beavering away” on a film script.
At the time, he said that “Luther has all the ingredients to echo those classic films of the 90s like Seven and Along Came A Spider and I think what we’d like to attempt is use that as a blueprint to create it. It will be more murder, more Volvos, more frowning Luther. Essentially we just want to try and take it to a much bigger remit and scale and perhaps international as well.”
Elba’s In The Long Run co-star Jimmy Akingbola chimed in to ask “Does Luther have a brother? Just checking. I’ve got the long coat.”
In the meantime, the third season of In The Long Run is set to premiere on the 22nd of July. Based on Elba’s memories of growing up on a Hackney council estate in the 1980s, he plays a fictionalised version of his own father.
