The University of Maryland football team is flipping the script on a classic tonight.
The Terps are off to a 2-0 start this season while wearing the popular “Script Terps” uniforms, featuring red helmets with the cursive “Terps” logo emblazoned on each side. The team had sported the design in decades past, and head coach Michael Locksley brought it back for one game per year after he took the helm in 2019. Now, the fan favorite is replacing the flag-inspired Maryland pride uniforms full-time this fall, and for tonight’s blackout game vs. former ACC rival Virginia, UMD is debuting an all-black version.
“When I think about our illustrious past as it relates to Maryland football, you think about Bobby Ross and Ralph Friedgen and the championship years wearing the Script Terps uniform,” said Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics Damon Evans. “I know our head coach, Michael Locksley, someone who grew up in this area, in the DMV, worshiped the Terps in that uniform. Now it’s time for us to pay that homage and push forward.”
This is far from the first time the Terps have switched up their headgear, with dozens of variations on the red, white, black and gold over the years. Think you remember that uniform evolution? Put your fandom to the test by matching the helmets below to the seasons they were worn. (Heads up: You might want to make sure the volume on your device isn’t at full blast.)
