Netflix just released the official trailer for animated movie The Willoughbys (their second original animated feature, the first being Klaus), which is adapted from the children’s book of the same name by Lois Lowry.
Lowry is most known for her widely-acclaimed book The Giver, a book that was also adapted to film but not done right (in my book-loving opinion). The Willoughbys looks like it will be a different kettle of fish; the animation looks great (has a stop motion vibe to it) and retains the fact that it is a narrative meant for children (the adaptation of The Giver became a typical YA narrative instead of what Lowry intended).
The children in the Willoughby family feel that their parents aren’t very involved in raising them, and that they would be better off raising themselves, so they hatch a sneaky plan to send their selfish parents on vacation. The siblings then embark on their own high-flying adventure to find the true meaning of family.
There is a whole host of talented people attached to this project, with the likes of Ricky Gervais (who is the narrator as well as executive producer of the film), Maya Rudolph (as the intensely colourful nanny), Alessia Cara (Jane Willoughby), Will Forte (Tim Willoughby), while Father Willoughby is voiced by Martin Short and Mother Willoughby is Jane Krakowski of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt fame.
The Willoughbys will be released on Netflix April 22, 2020.
