Sam Raimi, the director who helmed the original “Evil Dead” trilogy, has handpicked Lee Cronin to direct the next installment of the franchise. Raimi, who will also serve as a producer on the project, believes Cronin has the potential to create a fresh and terrifying take on the beloved horror series. Cronin’s previous work includes the critically acclaimed horror film “The Hole in the Ground,” which caught Raimi’s attention. Fans of the “Evil Dead” series are eagerly anticipating the new film and are excited to see what Cronin brings to the table under Raimi’s guidance..
In an interview with Empire, Bruce Campbell, who played Ash Williams in the Evil Dead franchise, confirmed Sam Raimi’s pick for the next Evil Dead film, as well as the title for said movie.
Raimi has chosen Lee Cronin, the writer/director behind 2019’s The Hole in the Ground for the next movie, which will be called Evil Dead Now. However, Ash Williams won’t be returning for this next installment.
Campbell explained: “From this point forward, they kind of have to stand on their own. Which is fine. And liberating. You could have different heroes, different heroines in this case. This one’s gonna be a little more dynamic…We just want to keep the series current. And the mantra, really, is that our heroes and heroines are just regular people. That’s what we’re going to continue.”
The first Evil Dead movie, which was written and directed by Sam Raimi in 1987, was followed by its sequel Army of Darkness in 1992. The franchise lay dormant until filmmaker Fede Alvarez remade the film in 2013, and somehow, the film became one of the best horror films of the last ten years. Campbell last starred in Ash vs. Evil Dead, which debuted in 2015 on Starz, where it ran for three seasons.
It will interesting to see how the franchise fares without Ash Williams as the main character, and if future installments will continue to deliver the same quality as the earlier entries.
