Paramount Pictures has announced new release dates for two highly anticipated films, “A Quiet Place Part II” and “Top Gun: Maverick”. “A Quiet Place Part II”, the sequel to the successful thriller, will now hit theaters on September 17, 2021, instead of its previous date in April. Meanwhile, “Top Gun: Maverick”, the long-awaited follow-up to the iconic 1986 film, will be released on November 19, 2021, after facing several delays. These announcements come as the film industry continues to navigate the challenges presented by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which has significantly impacted the release schedules of many movies..
The Hollywood Reporter brings us the news that A Quiet Place Part II now has a new release date. Initially, the movie was set to release March 20 but was postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus that was sweeping the country. Paramount has now settled on a new release date for A Quiet Place Part II, with a release date of September 4, 2020 – a labour day opening weekend. This does feel like a surge of optimism in the air, with Paramount banking on the pandemic being stabilized by then.
Paramount also moved the release date of Top Gun: Maverick, from a June 24th release date to December 23rd, tapping on the Christmas season as opposed to the summer blockbuster it was supposed to be. Of course these dates aren’t set in stone. If the coronavirus situation does not improve, cinemas could be closed for far longer, and all these releases might just have to be pushed to 2021.
Given the profile of the movies, and how they are much-awaited sequels, it is doubtful that they will get a VOD (Video on Demand) release – these are movies we want to see in the cinema and not at home. Other calendar changes for Paramount include The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run, previously scheduled for May 22, which will now hit theaters on July 31.
