All five members of NewJeans — Danielle, Haerin, Hanni, Hyein, and Minji — performed the song written by Riot Games principal composer Sebastien Najand and Alex Seaver of Mako to mark the culmination of season 13.
The anthem will be played throughout the tournament, which is set to take place from October 10 to November 19 in venues around South Korea.
“It was a new experience for all of us,” said NewJeans. “It was fun to try a new genre and sound. Through this collaboration, we are happy to present a song that incorporates both NewJeans’ and League of Legends’ unique colors. We hope it brings you a new sense of empowerment!”
With this collaboration, NewJeans becomes the first K-pop act to sing the Worlds anthem, and the third girl group to work with Riot Games for League of Legends, following (G)I-DLE and Twice for K/DA.
The song’s music video focuses on Korean pro player Kim “Deft” Hyuk-kyu, starting from how he discovered League of Legends in high school and leading up to his incredible victory during Worlds 2022.
“Between Worlds taking place in Korea and NewJeans’ meteoric rise, this partnership felt fated as a true cultural celebration,” said Carrie Dunn, Global Head of Creative, Esports at Riot Games. “‘Gods’ juxtaposes epic and intense production elements with NewJeans’ beautiful and powerful vocals – conveying both the grind and the glory that awaits our players at Worlds.”
NewJeans made their debut on July 22, 2022, under ADOR, an independent label within HYBE led by Hee Jin Min. They aim to redefine K-pop with genuine and youth-centric music, much like the timeless appeal of a pair of jeans.
Their debut album, “NewJeans,” released on August 1, 2022, became a massive success, making them the first K-pop group to achieve a million-seller debut. One of their title tracks, “Hype Boy,” maintained a record-breaking 37-week presence on the Billboard Global 200 chart, an unprecedented feat for a female K-pop act.
The League of Legends World Championship, often referred to as Worlds, is the pinnacle of competitive esports within League of Legends. It is an annual tournament organized by Riot Games that brings together the best professional teams from around the world.
Teams qualify through regional competitions before competing on a global stage. Worlds features intense battles between these elite teams in a series of matches, culminating in a grand final. Millions of fans tune in to watch the action, and the winning team is crowned the world champion, earning not only prestige but also a substantial prize pool.
