Mike Flanagan, the acclaimed director known for his work on horror films, has teased his next project: a Stephen King adaptation. Flanagan took to Twitter to share a photo of the Stephen King novel “Revival,” sparking speculation that this could be his next film. The director has a strong track record with Stephen King adaptations, having previously tackled “Gerald’s Game” and “Doctor Sleep.” Fans of Flanagan and King’s work have eagerly awaited news of a collaboration between the two, and this teaser has ignited excitement. Details on the project remain scarce, but anticipation is undoubtedly high..
During an appearance this week on The Kingcast podcast, Flanagan said his Revival movie would be his darkest King adaptation yet. Flanagan emphasizes that he won’t be taking the sentimental approach to the material, it will be “bleak and mean” instead.
“It is relentlessly dark and cynical and I’m enjoying the hell out of that,” said Flanagan. “I haven’t gotten to end a movie [this] way since Absentia, maybe? Maybe Ouija? This one was a really fun piece of material for me because I get to be like, ‘Oh, you want a dark ending? Cool, get ready’”
King’s Revival centers around a reverend, who after losing his family in a tragic accident decides to renounce his faith. He is banished from the town and then spends many years pursuing a career as a sideshow huckster before pretending to regain his belief in God and becoming a prolific faith healer. Flanagan confirmed that the first screenplay draft is done and has King’s seal of approval.
Flanagan is no stranger to the world of Stephen King, having directed last year’s Doctor Sleep. In the podcast, Flanagan discussed the scene that was a bit too horrific for King himself, which ended up being removed from the film.
“When Tremblay got killed [King] leaned over to me and said, ‘That’s a little brutal, isn’t it?’ We changed it. We backed off,” Flanagan said. “When he saw it, we maybe cut to Jacob two additional times so there were two more stabs. We took those out. That was the most uncomfortable I’ve ever been on a set. That was horrible for everyone except Jacob, who had a blast. That was Stephen’s only note for the movie.” If Stephen King found it to be too much, then it must have really been horrifying.
Doctor Sleep is currently streaming on HBO Go and HBO Max.
