Paramount Pictures has chosen Rocketman director, Dexter Fletcher, to helm the upcoming reboot of The Saint. The 1960s TV series was previously adapted into a movie in 1997 starring Val Kilmer, but the new project is said to be a fresh take on the iconic character. The Saint follows the adventures of Simon Templar, a thief turned vigilante who uses his abilities to aid the innocent. The reboot is expected to be a blend of action and adventure, showcasing a modern twist on the classic story. The project is still in development and no casting details have been announced..
According to Variety, Rocketman director Dexter Fletcher, is set to direct Paramount’s reboot of The Saint, with Seth Grahame-Smith tapped to write the script. Fletcher was pursued ardently by Paramount after the success of Rocketman, and prior to that he even took on the directing duties for Bohemian Rhapsody after Brian Singer was fired.
The Saint is a 1920s novel series by Leslie Charteris, and it was adapted to film in 1997’s The Saint, starring Val Kilmer and Elisabeth Shue. The movie follows Simon Templar (aka The Saint), a Robin Hood-esque criminal and thief for hire. If you have yet to see the movie, I absolutely encourage you to watch it.
It is peak 90s goodness and Val Kilmer takes on all these different roles and disguises. The plot is a bit bonkers with the whole cold fusion bit, but hey, that is the essence of 90s action thrillers. I must have watched it at least a dozen times, because Val Kilmer was all the rage in the 90s. The soundtrack is also amazing (do yourself a favour and listen to Orbital’s The Saint).
While we didn’t get a franchise out of the first film version of The Saint, Paramount is hopeful that this could be a possibility now, especially with Fletcher on board. Fletcher has also signed on to direct Universal’s Renfield, as part of their Dark Universe.
