At the 92nd Academy Awards, held on February 9, 2020, Parasite emerged as the night’s biggest winner, taking home four awards including Best Picture, making history as the first non-English language film to win the prestigious award. Meanwhile, 1917, the highly acclaimed war drama, stumbled in its quest for major wins, only managing to secure three awards in technical categories. The night also celebrated the achievements of Joaquin Phoenix, Renée Zellweger, Brad Pitt, and Laura Dern, who all won acting accolades. The ceremony saw a mix of expected victories alongside a few surprises, marking another memorable Oscars ceremony..
We’ve reached the end of the awards season with the Oscar winners announced, and it was a wonderful night for South Korea’s Parasite, winning four of its six nominations, including Best Picture, a surprise win for Best Director, and taking home prizes for its Original Screenplay and International Film.
For other multiple winners, 1917 had three wins for Cinematography, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects, though there’s no doubt Universal is disappointed in it losing seven of its ten categories. Ford v Ferrari had two wins for Sound Editing and Film Editing, Joker took home Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix and Original Score, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood had wins for Brad Pitt in Supporting Actor and in Production Design.
