Penang is preparing for water cuts amid fears of potential floods due to the muddy state of the Sg Muda river. The river, which supplies water to Penang, has become muddy once again following heavy rainfall in the area. This has raised concerns about water quality and supply, prompting authorities to take precautions. The Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) has issued a warning, advising residents to conserve water to avoid any future shortages. The situation highlights the vulnerability of water supply systems in the face of extreme weather events, emphasizing the need for proper infrastructure and management to prevent such disruptions..
GEORGE TOWN: Penang is bracing for possible water supply disruptions stemming from floods in Baling, Kedah.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow advised the people to not panic and store as much water as possible while the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) monitors the situation.
“Several areas in the state will face water disruption. We are still waiting for PBAPP’s update… Penangites, save as much water as possible,” he told reporters after attending 2023 National Registration Day at the Penang Chinese Town Hall on Friday (Sept 29).

Chow said the disruption was caused by high levels of water turbidity caused by flooding in Baling on Thursday (Sept 28).
He said according to PBAPP, the turbidity level of water from Sungai Muda at the Sungai Dua water treatment plant intake was still acceptable at 3am.
However, the level increased sharply at 5am and the plant was unable to treat raw water from the river owing to risks from the high turbidity.
He said this is a repeat of what happened during earlier flooding that affected Sungai Muda.

“PBAPP has announced that the treatment capacity at Sungai Dua LRA is (down to) 30% and supply disruption (is expected) in many areas of Penang,” he said.
In a notice posted by PBAPP on Facebook early this morning, the water authority said low water pressure can be expected in George Town, as well as North and Central Seberang Prai.
South Bukit Dumbar to Balik Pulau as well as South Seberang Prai are also affected, it added.
