Picture and Director Wins Strengthen 1917’s Legacy – Top

The 77th Golden Globes Awards are all wrapped up, and it was a night full of surprising wins, and a lot of potential changes in major categories. The most awards of the night went out to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which took home Picture: Comedy/Musical, Supporting Actor, and Screenplay.

1917 came off as a huge winner for Director and Motion Picture: Drama, making a huge splash in the awards race. It’s been a while since a late December limited release went over big at the Oscars, so it feels even more unexpected when you think about that. Rocketman and Joker also won a pair of awards each, with most films winning one award or being shut out, like The Irishman, going 0/5.

Here’s a breakdown of all the film categories.

 

Motion Picture: Drama – 1917

Predicted Winner: Joker

This came as a big surprise in a stacked category. Like Mendes’ work in the directing category, I’ve been putting 1917 in as an expected nominee, but not as a winner. We’ll see just how much traction it can gain in the coming weeks.

 

Motion Picture: Comedy/Musical – Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Predicted Winner: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

This category was going to come down to this or Jojo Rabbit, and with all the love for Hollywood throughout the night and on nominations morning, it came as no surprise to hear Pierce Brosnan say the title at the ceremony.

 

Best Director – Sam Mendes for 1917

Predicted Winner: Bong Joon Ho for Parasite

Wow. For a late bloomer in the race, I’ve kind of been putting Mendes in as a nominee, but never as a serious contender to win. That changes now. Sure, Martin Scorsese and Bong Joon Ho will also continue to be in contention, but now Mendes is added to the list of possible winners.

 

Best Actor: Drama – Joaquin Phoenix for Joker

Predicted Winner: Joaquin Phoenix

I think Joaquin has my vote for most awkward speech, but it’s the work that counts, and he did phenomenal work this year. The speech was very much Joaquin being Joaquin, for better or worse, but again I think it comes down to him or Adam Driver at the Oscars, and in the potential back-and-forth battle that’s about to go down, that’s one for Phoenix.

 

Best Actress: Drama – Renee Zellweger for Judy

Predicted Winner: Renee Zellweger

A wonderful performance rewarded is always a great sight to see. Renee’s speech had some hits and misses, but I don’t think it will hurt her too much going forward. I see her winning a lot more awards through the rest of the season.

 

Best Actor: Comedy/Musical – Taron Egerton for Rocketman

Predicted Winner: Eddie Murphy for Dolemite is My Name

This definitely helps Egerton’s campaign for Best Actor. While I think he’s brilliant in the film when he’s just walking around and living his life as Elton John, I can’t say the singing portion worked for me. The Oscar race for Best Actor will be a tough one, but with this win, Egerton might have the edge over a few other potential nominees.

 

Best Actress: Comedy/Musical – Awkwafina for The Farewell

Predicted Winner: Awkwafina

This seemed like the easy pick in the category, and like Egerton, it helps her case for Oscar voters. We’ll see if she can make the list next Monday.

 

Best Actor in a Supporting Role – Brad Pitt for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Predicted Winner: Brad Pitt

This seemed like a slam dunk, and it was topped off by a nice speech by Pitt. Again, I’m not in love with this performance, but it was one of the few predictions I had right.

 

Best Actress in a Supporting Role – Laura Dern for Marriage Story

Predicted Winner: Jennifer Lopez for Hustlers

Dern’s win here is a likely trigger that she will win everything under the sun here. Sometimes the Globes go with the megastars (in this case Jennifer Lopez), and that would have made for a fun, competitive category, but with Dern’s overall popularity, it feels like this is one award that will stick.

 

Best Screenplay – Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Predicted Winner: Marriage Story

This is an interesting win, and Tarantino’s third in this category. Since he’s going head-to-head with both Parasite and Marriage Story in the Original Screenplay category, I’m going to lean on more awards shows before I say that this solidifies his win in this category at the Oscars.

 

Best Foreign Language Film – Parasite

Predicted Winner: Parasite

This was expected, and I don’t see too many scenarios where Parasite doesn’t repeat across the board.

 

Best Animated Feature – Missing Link

Predicted Winner: Toy Story 4

A pleasant surprise, this opens up the possibility that Pixar may finally have a large contender go down in a competitive category. Sure, we’ve seen Cars, Monsters Inc., and Incredibles 2 all lose to other films, but otherwise, Pixar is a staple at the Oscars. We’ll see if this one sticks around the rest of the season and outlasts the might of Pixar.

 

Best Score – Joker

Predicted Winner: 1917

While I love the score to this movie, and I’m sure many are happy with this win, I’ll just say that the Golden Globes have a history of awarding scores that don’t repeat at the Oscars. First Man, The Theory of Everything, All is Lost, and The Painted Veil are all examples. No doubt Joker will be nominated, and it may go on to win, but this race isn’t over yet.

 

Best Song – “I’m Gonna Love Me Again” from Rocketman

Predicted Winner: “Into the Unknown” from Frozen II

The song is likely to be nominated at the Oscars, and it may go on to win. John already has an Oscar win for The Lion King, but then again, my pick, “Into the Unknown”, written by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, already has two Oscar wins. Therefore, I can see them overlooking them for someone else.
