Sony has announced the launch of PlayStation Productions, an in-house production studio aimed at creating film and television adaptations of popular video game titles. The new venture will be overseen by Asad Qizilbash and overseen by Shannon Studstill. Sony hopes that by developing these adaptations in-house, they can ensure that the essence of the games is preserved and capture a wider audience. The move comes as video game adaptations are gaining popularity, with successful projects such as Netflix’s The Witcher and Detective Pikachu. PlayStation Productions will focus on creating high-quality content for both streaming services and traditional channels..
Sony Interactive Entertainment have announced the launch of PlayStation Productions, an in-house production studio that will work on adapting PlayStation’s extensive catalog of exclusives into films and TV shows. The studio will be helmed by Asad Qizilbash, with Chairman of Worldwide Studios at SIE Shawn Layden overseeing things, and the first slate of projects are already underway.
Having been reported exclusively by The Hollywood Reporter, Shawn Layden said to them: “We’ve got 25 years of game development experience and that’s created 25 years of great games, franchises and stories. We feel that now is a good time to look at other media opportunities across streaming or film or television to give our worlds life in another spectrum.”
Unlike other video game adaptations, production will be handled in-house instead of licensed out to other companies, which allows Sony to retain creative control over their projects. PlayStation Productions will also be partnered with Sony Pictures, which also means that the studio will have the time and resources needed to create the best adaptations possible.
Honestly, though PlayStation Productions was only announced today, it sounds like they’re making all the right moves. Having a video game company handle video game adaptations without the pressure of meeting strict deadlines and rushing projects sounds great. Fingers crossed it’ll actually lead to some quality films and programming.
