West Melbourne police are investigating a deadly crash involving a motorcycle which collided with a Brevard County Public school bus along a busy stretch of roadway Thursday.
Police said the motorcyclist’s body was trapped beneath the school bus, which was transporting 28 children to Central Middle School. None of the students were injured but several were allowed to go home following the collision, which took place at the Minton Road entrance to the 1,175-student school.
Traffic homicide investigators were at the crash site, which is near several school campuses, late Thursday morning, said Graig Erenstoft, spokesperson for the West Melbourne Police Department. A tow truck was used to remove the bus, with others working to remove the motorcyclist body from the site.
“The students were able to get transferred. There were no other injuries,” said Erenstoft.
“We haven’t been able to identify (the motorcyclist) yet. We are looking at video, every aspect,” he said.
The death was the 25th reported traffic crash to claim the life of a motorcyclist in Brevard County this year, according to records.
Brevard County Public school officials said counselors were available for the students who may have seen the gruesome aftermath of the collision. Police did talk with school officials about the possibility of bringing counselors in to talk. The traffic crash was reported about 9 a.m. near the intersection of Minton Road, just south of Wingate Boulevard. “We’re concerned about the the kids experiencing that,” said Russell Bruhn, spokesperson for the school district.
“Our hearts are broken for the other person involved in the crash as well,” he said.
The northbound lanes were cleared for motorists just after noon.

West Melbourne police had rerouted motorists to Hollywood Boulevard and other surrounding roads as an alternative.
