In anticipation of the Producers Guild Awards and Directors Guild Awards, predictions for the 2020 nominations have been made. Speculations suggest that films such as “The Irishman,” “Joker,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” and “1917” are likely to receive nominations for Best Picture, reflecting critical acclaim and commercial success. Additionally, directors including Martin Scorsese, Todd Phillips, Quentin Tarantino, and Sam Mendes are expected to receive nominations in their respective categories, while Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite” is also gaining strong predictions. These nominations will provide insight into the frontrunners for the upcoming award season..
Both the Producers and the Directors Guild Award nominations will be announced on Tuesday, January 7th, and this is another big industry group letting us know which films are closing in on Oscar nominations. The DGA usually goes four for five with their nominees, but the PGA has a solid ten nominations, and in the last five years, they’ve only missed 4 films (Phantom Thread, Room, Selma, and Philomena) that went on to be nominated for Best Picture.
Producers Guild Predictions
1917
Ford v Ferrari
Joker
Jojo Rabbit
Little Women
Marriage Story
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Parasite
The Irishman
The Farewell
These are the ten films I have in as possible Best Picture nominees, but the PGA doesn’t always go with the most prestigious films of the year. We’ve seen Deadpool, A Quiet Place, and Wonder Woman nominated, so sometimes they go with the more critically adored blockbusters. For those at home rooting for a superhero film to be nominated, I’d put my money on Joker, in spite of the massive success that Avengers: Endgame reached. Endgame still has a shot, but it’s small.
A few other possibilities are Bombshell, The Two Popes, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Knives Out, Dolemite is My Name, Uncut Gems, and Hustlers.
Directors Guild Predictions
Bong Joon Ho – Parasite
Sam Mendes – 1917
Todd Phillips – Joker
Martin Scorsese – The Irishman
Quentin Tarantino – Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
I’m going with an upset nominee here in Todd Phillips, and this also lines up with the nominees at the Golden Globe Awards. Again, remembering the DGA likes to have a few surprises, like Clint Eastwood for American Sniper, I also see that Joker has done well across the other guilds, with nominations at the Cinematographers, Make-Up and Hair Stylists, Art Directors, ACE Eddie, Cinema Audio, and Sound Editors Golden Reel guilds. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll be nominated across the board at the Oscars, but being well liked by these guilds is a good sign.
A few other directors to watch out for are Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story), Greta Gerwig (Little Women), James Mangold (Ford v Ferrari), Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit), and Lulu Wang (The Farewell).
